Job summary

UT Health San Antonio is seeking a Medical Assistant to perform general clinical duties in an outpatient care setting, including taking vital signs, injections, basic diagnostic tests, specimen collection, and maintaining examination rooms.

Under supervision, you will document patient information in the EMR, support physicians, manage appointments, perform POCT, and assist with call center tasks. This role is on-site in San Antonio, TX.

Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of directly-related experience as a Medical Assistant is required.
  • Knowledge of EPIC software; EPIC super user capabilities preferred.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork in a clinical setting.
  • Meets all training and competency requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Intakes patients by obtaining vital signs and weight.
  • Obtains patient history, chief complaint, meds, allergies; documents in EMR.
  • Reports pertinent findings to physicians.
  • Manages patient appointments per physician schedules and protocols.
  • Responds to patient messages per clinic policy.
  • Handles medication refills per clinic policy.
  • Prepares charts for next clinic; provides results to physicians.
  • Communicates patient information to physicians promptly.
  • Answers external and internal calls; assists in call center and transfers as needed.
  • Performs POCT; documents findings and reports to RN or provider.
  • Assists with other duties as assigned.

Job description

Under general supervision, responsible for general clinical duties such as taking vital signs, giving injections, performing simple diagnostic tests, collecting specimens, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms at an outpatient care site. May perform some administrative duties and support the documentation of patient records as dictated by the physician or provider.

Responsibilities
  • Intakes patients by obtaining vital signs weight.
  • Obtains history, chief complaint, medications, allergies, and documents appropriately in the EMR.
  • Report all pertinent findings to Physicians.
  • Manages patient appointments according to the Physician's schedules and protocols.
  • Answers messages from patients by clinic policy.
  • Handle all medication refills or request via clinic policy.
  • Prepares charts as necessary for next scheduled clinic, provide physician with all necessary test results, lab results and medical records as requested.
  • Communicate all necessary patient information to Physician in a timely manner.
  • Handles and answers external as well as internal phone calls and assists in department call center transferring calls to the appropriate departments.
  • Performs Point of Care Testing (POCT), documents and reports clinical findings to Registered Nurse (RN) in charge and/or Provider.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

  • Possess analytical thinking – this role requires analyzing information and using logic to coordinate work within schedule constraints and handle emergent requirements in a timely manner.
  • Participates as an integral part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing the highest quality of care to the patient the UT Health Way.
  • Knowledge of EPIC software; may be required to be EPIC super user.
  • Meets all training and competency requirements.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED
