Job summary

University of Maryland Medical System seeks a Medical Assistant I to support on-site patient care under direct supervision. You will assist providers and nursing staff with clinical tasks, document in the EMR, manage patient flow, handle basic clerical duties, and ensure proper medication storage and transport as needed.

You will greet patients professionally, perform vital signs and screenings, prepare rooms, adhere to infection control and practice policies, and serve as a resource for staff

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
• One year supervised work experience or two years within last five years.
• Current BLS certification.
• Medical Assistant certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Delivers an exceptional patient experience by greeting patients professionally, communicating effectively, addressing concerns, and supporting service recovery when needed.
• Performs and documents clinical duties including patient intake, vital signs, screenings, specimen collection, diagnostic testing, medication administration, vaccinations, and provider support during procedures.
• Maintains exam rooms and equipment, follows infection control protocols, manages supplies, and adheres to hospital and practice policies.
• Supports practice operations through front desk assistance, patient education, regulatory compliance, safety reporting, process improvement, and active team participation.
• Serves as a clinical resource and mentor by supporting staff training, onboarding of new medical assistants and students, and ongoing learning.

Fulfillment of job duties requires access to medication storage areas and to transport medications to/ from medication storage and delivery areas. Fully participate in the day‑to‑day operations and patient flow and acts as a resource for Medical Assistant I. Demonstrates leadership by collaboration, teamwork, communication, accountability, customer service, and advanced knowledge of clinical skills.

• Ensures safe, efficient, and compliant clinical operations by maintaining exam rooms and equipment, following infection control protocols, managing supplies, and adhering to hospital and practice policies.
• Supports practice operations through timely communication, assistance with front desk functions, patient education, regulatory compliance, safety reporting, participation in process improvement initiatives, and active engagement in team meetings.
• Serves as a clinical resource and mentor by supporting staff training, competency development, onboarding of new medical assistants and students, continuous learning, and other duties that contribute to high‑quality patient care and team performance.

Education & Experience - Required

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
• Special circumstances to consider an exception may include: (1 year of supervised work experience in a medical assisting field within the last 3 years; or 2 years of supervised work experience in a medical assisting field within the last 5 years). These should be vetted by Human Resources Director and Department Director.
• Current BLS certification.
• Medical Assistant certification preferred
