Overview:
Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, the Medical Assistant works in the clinical setting providing direct and indirect service for patients and providers. The medical assistant works with the interdisciplinary health team in providing a wide variety of clinical, administrative and technical support functions in the delivery of healthcare in the Ketamine Infusion Unit. The Medical Assistant for the Ketamine Infusion Unit will also be cross-trained to perform the administrative responsibilities of the Patient Service Coordinator II.

Medical Assistant: Principle Duties and Responsibilities - Clinical
Provides safe, compassionate patient care under the supervision of the Medical Director and licensed personal (RNs) working with the MA on a daily basis
Performs all duties and responsibilities as described in the Medical Assistantposition description
Facilitates flow of patients from waiting room to infusion chairs in a timely manner as close as possible to scheduled appointment times Observes, reports and records vital signs, height and weight, pain level, and allergies as directed by the provider
Obtains vital signs, height and weight, pain level and allergies. Documents results in the patient's record (LMR).
Monitors vital signs on patient receiving ketamine administration as per protocol.
Promptly informs the MD, anesthesiologist, or staff nurse of any significant change in vital signs or acute symptoms
Conducts a brief focused assessment of the patient, including interval changes
Performs a variety of complex patient treatments and procedures according to standard policies and procedures, these may include but are not limited to:
Blood pressure cuff, pulse oximetry probe placement and 02 saturation measurement provides snack, blankets, ice packs, comfort items help with discharge procedures, linen change helps coordinate change in infusion schedule with MD and administrative assistant prepares forms for informed consent
Physically prepares patients for and assists care providers with examinations and therapeutic procedures
Instructs and assists patients while getting infusions
Instructs patients and families for expectations in the clinic
Participates in daily operational activities necessary for a safe patient and staff environment. Maintains JACHO standards on the unit
Cares for medical equipment and supplies and monitors sterilization of appropriate equipment.
Ensures patient safety
Escorts patients from waiting area to and from treatment areas
Rounds on patients routinely for to assist with falls prevention
Aids patients with toileting (including escorting patients to and from bathroom to prevent patient falls)
Assists with patient transfers (i.e. wheelchair to/from bed/stretcher; stretcher to/from bed) and bed positioning
Provides nutritional snacks for patients as appropriate
Collaborates with Medical Director to identify and meet learning needs

Patient Services Coordinator II: Principal Duties and Responsibilities - Administrative
Cross trained to provide back up for all check in and checkout functions as outlined by the MGH/MGPO Front Desk Standards andCadence Front Desk Check In User without Registration Training Track.
Maintains confidentiality and privacy which is consistent with HIPAA guidelines.
Provides basic information/instructions to patients regarding Hospital and practice procedures. Will arrange escort or interpreter services as needed.
Is competent in the use of automated systems used on the unit.
Basic understanding of Ambulatory Patient Tracking System.
Knowledge of Voalte communicating system
Competence in scheduling patient appointments via Epic Hyperspace
Prints upcoming schedules for patient verification and confirmation.
Performs the daily management of encounter form processing and reconcilement.
Knowledge of scanning procedures and label printing.
Ensures completeness of all encounter forms by the patient as required for processing
Remains current on any changing issues within the unit which affects initial patient flow
