JOB SUMMARY: The Medical Assistant is responsible for directly supporting a healthcare department or unit by completing administrative and clinical tasks for a physician's office, hospital, outpatient clinic, or other healthcare facility i.e., clinic, medical director, clinic staff (RN), outpatient practitioners. The duties vary with the location, specialty, and size or complexity of the practice. A successful Medical Assistant will be well versed in psychiatry, capable of understanding mental status, and the use of psychotropic medications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES: The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification with or without an accommodation. Administrative Duties May Include

• Entering/maintaining electronic health records
• Answering telephones and greeting patients with outstanding customer service
• Updating and filing patient medical records
• Coding and filling out insurance forms
• Scheduling appointments
• Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services
• Handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping
  
  

Clinical Duties May Include

• Taking medical histories, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination
• Assisting the physician during exams
• Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, drawing blood, performing basic laboratory tests
• Instructing patients about medication and special diets
• Preparing and administering medications as directed by a physician, authorizing prescription refills as directed
• Taking electrocardiograms, removing sutures and changing dressings
  
  

Patient Liaison

• Medical assistants are instrumental in helping patients feel at ease in the physician's office and often explain the physician's instructions
• LSBC reserves the right to change the location of work and that an employee may be required to work from any office or department of the company as the need arises or due to company demands.
• Participate consistently in all in-service training programs.
• The ability to comply with the regulations requiring a workplace of dignity and respect and equal employment opportunity compliance.
• The ability to work collaboratively with others and to accept constructive criticism from supervisors and managers.

Education & Experience

• Education:
• High school diploma or GED required
• Possess or be able to obtain First Aid and CPR certification
• MA Certification preferred
• Experience:
• Some college preferred
• Minimum of One (1) year experience in a position that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities as a medical assistant.
