Job summary

Akron Children's Hospital currently seeks a Medical Assistant for a part-time, onsite role supporting providers and nurses. The position involves clinical and administrative tasks, patient preparation, vital signs, phlebotomy, and documentation in EPIC, with emphasis on teamwork and patient safety.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma, completion of a recognized Medical Assistant program, BLS certification, and familiarity with MS Office and EMR systems.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of medical terminology required.
• Experience in a healthcare environment preferred.
• Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
• Experience with EPIC or similar EMR is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepares patients for examination; takes vital signs; performs phlebotomy as directed.
• Collects data contributing to assessment and discharge planning under nurse direction.
• Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens per policy.
• Communicates patient findings to Provider/Nurse with proper documentation.
• Accurate and timely documentation of care within EPIC.
• Performs appointment scheduling, visit preparation, and patient tracking as needed.
• Performs department-specific clinical duties such as POCT and screenings.
• Assists with general office duties (faxing, copying, filing) as needed.
• Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms.
• Maintains positive relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
• Follows safety policies to ensure a safe care environment.
• Other duties as assigned

Summary: The Medical Assistant role provides clinical and administrative support for patients under the direction of a Provider and/or licensed Nurse.

Responsibilities

1. Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by the Providers according to policy and procedure
2. Collects data that contributes to the assessment and evaluation of individualized care and needs of assigned patients, including discharge plans, under the direction of the Licensed Nurse
3. Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens in accordance with policy and procedure
4. Communicates patient findings and pertinent information to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse utilizing appropriate communication/documentation processes
5. Accurate and timely documentation of care within EPIC system
6. Performs point-of-service activities such as appointment scheduling, visit preparation, co-payment collection and patient tracking as needed
7. Performs clinical duties that are department specific such as POCT, hearing and vision screenings, and any other procedures
8. Performs routine task and general office duties such as faxing, copying, filing, etc. as needed
9. Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms
10. Develops and maintains positive relationships with patients, families, and colleagues
11. Follows safety policies and procedures in the delivery of care to assure a safe environment for patients, families, and other staff members

Technical Expertise

1. Experience in phlebotomy is preferred.
2. Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology is required.
3. Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred.
4. Experience working in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
5. Experience working in electronic medical record (i.e., EPIC) or similar software is preferred.

Education and Experience

1. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
2. Completion of an approved (valid) Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is required.
3. Certification:Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
4. Certification: Medical Assistant certification preferred.
5. Years of relevant experience: no experience required.
6. Years of experience supervising: None.
