Job summary

Akron Children’s Hospital in Ohio is seeking a full-time Medical Assistant to provide clinical and administrative support under the supervision of a Provider and/or licensed Nurse.

The role includes taking vital signs, phlebotomy, data collection for care plans, specimen handling, EPIC charting, and coordinating patient flow. Candidates should have a Medical Assistant program completion or equivalent, a High School diploma, BLS certification, and comfort with MS Office; EPIC experience is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy experience is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • Experience in healthcare environment preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software required.
  • EPIC or similar EMR experience preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of an approved Medical Assistant Program, EMT or Paramedic Program is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Medical Assistant certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patients for examination; records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as directed.
  • Collects data for assessment and discharge planning under the direction of the Licensed Nurse.
  • Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens per policy and procedure.
  • Communicates patient findings to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse using appropriate documentation.
  • Accurate and timely documentation of care within the EPIC system.
  • Performs point-of-service tasks such as appointment scheduling and co-payment collection.
  • Performs department-specific duties such as POCT and screenings.
  • Cleans, stocks and prepares examination rooms; handles general office tasks as needed.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with patients, families and colleagues.
  • Follows safety policies to deliver safe patient care; other duties as assigned.

Summary:

The Medical Assistant role provides clinical and administrative support for patients under the direction of a Provider and/or licensed Nurse.

Responsibilities:

  1. Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by the Providers according to policy and procedure
  2. Collects data that contributes to the assessment and evaluation of individualized care and needs of assigned patients, including discharge plans, under the direction of the Licensed Nurse
  3. Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens in accordance with policy and procedure
  4. Communicates patient findings and pertinent information to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse utilizing appropriate communication/documentation processes
  5. Accurate and timely documentation of care within EPIC system
  6. Performs point-of-service activities such as appointment scheduling, visit preparation, co-payment collection and patient tracking as needed
  7. Performs clinical duties that are department specific such as POCT, hearing and vision screenings, and any other procedures
  8. Performs routine task and general office duties such as faxing, copying, filing, etc. as needed
  9. Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms
  10. Develops and maintains positive relationships with patients, families, and colleagues
  11. Follows safety policies and procedures in the delivery of care to assure a safe environment for patients, families, and other staff members
  12. Other duties assigned

Other information:

Technical Expertise

  1. Experience in phlebotomy is preferred.
  2. Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology is required.
  3. Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred.
  4. Experience working in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
  5. Experience working in electronic medical record (i.e., EPIC) or similar software is preferred.

Education and Experience

  1. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  2. Completion of an approved (valid) Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is required.
  3. Certification:Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
  4. Certification: Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  5. Years of relevant experience: no experience required.
  6. Years of experience supervising: None.
