Job summary

Akron Children's Hospital seeks a Medical Assistant to provide clinical and administrative support for patients under a Provider and/or licensed Nurse. The role includes phlebotomy, vital signs, data collection, and accurate EPIC documentation, with room for growth.

The position requires a Medical Assistant program completion, BLS, and strong knowledge of medical terminology. Onsite, full-time with a $5,000 bonus available and a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Completion of an approved Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required.
• Medical Assistant certification is preferred.
• Years of relevant experience: no experience required.
• Years of experience supervising: None.

Responsibilities

• Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by the Providers.
• Collects data contributing to assessment and needs of patients, including discharge plans, under Licensed Nurse direction.
• Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens per policy.
• Communicates patient findings to Provider/Nurse using appropriate documentation.
• Documents care in EPIC system accurately and timely.
• Performs POCT, appointment scheduling, co-payment collection and patient tracking as needed.
• Performs department-specific clinical duties and other procedures.
• Handles routine office duties like faxing, copying, filing, etc.

Summary:

The Medical Assistant role provides clinical and administrative support for patients under the direction of a Provider and/or licensed Nurse.

Responsibilities:

1. Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by the Providers according to policy and procedure
2. Collects data that contributes to the assessment and evaluation of individualized care and needs of assigned patients, including discharge plans, under the direction of the Licensed Nurse
3. Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens in accordance with policy and procedure
4. Communicates patient findings and pertinent information to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse utilizing appropriate communication/documentation processes
5. Accurate and timely documentation of care within EPIC system
6. Performs point-of-service activities such as appointment scheduling, visit preparation, co-payment collection and patient tracking as needed
7. Performs clinical duties that are department specific such as POCT, hearing and vision screenings, and any other procedures
8. Performs routine task and general office duties such as faxing, copying, filing, etc. as needed
9. Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms
10. Develops and maintains positive relationships with patients, families, and colleagues
11. Follows safety policies and procedures in the delivery of care to assure a safe environment for patients, families, and other staff members
12. Other duties assigned

Other information:

Technical Expertise

1. Experience in phlebotomy is preferred.
2. Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology is required.
3. Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred.
4. Experience working in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
5. Experience working in electronic medical record (i.e., EPIC) or similar software is preferred.

Education and Experience

1. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
2. Completion of an approved (valid) Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is required.
3. Certification:Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
4. Certification: Medical Assistant certification preferred.
5. Years of relevant experience: no experience required.
6. Years of experience supervising: None.
