Qualifications

What We Want

The Medical Assistant I, under general supervision, provides direct patient care and clinical support in an outpatient primary care setting. The role includes assisting clinicians with patient visits, obtaining and documenting vital signs and medical histories, and performing basic clinical procedures such as injections and medication administration. The Medical Assistant I also serves as a medical instrument technician, responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and stocking medical instruments, equipment, and exam rooms to ensure a safe and efficient clinical environment.

Additional Details

Standard work hours for this position are 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, with holidays off. Occasional after-hour duties may be required.

Responsibilities
Patient Care Activities
  • Provides direct patient care and serves as a liaison between patients and providers.
  • Escorts patients from reception to exam and treatment areas.
  • Measures and documents vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, height, and weight.
  • Prepares patients for examinations, tests, and procedures; provides basic patient education.
  • Assists and/or chaperones providers during examinations and procedures.
  • Performs basic clinical procedures, including injections, medication administration, vision and auditory screenings, EKGs, laboratory specimen handling, nebulizer treatments, ear lavage, minor wound care, and fitting of orthopedic slings, splints, and braces.
  • Answers telephone calls, takes messages, and communicates information to the care team.
  • Assists patients with scheduling, rescheduling, or canceling appointments.
Infection Control and Cleanliness
  • Ensures cleanliness of exam and treatment rooms, exam tables, countertops, and doorknobs to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes medical instruments as appropriate and by manufacturer guidelines.
Electronic Medical Records Management
  • Obtains, updates, and documents patient medical histories and consent signatures in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Assists providers in maintaining accurate patient health information.
  • Documents clinical procedures and laboratory specimen collections in the EMR.
Inventory and Office Maintenance
  • Ensures patient care areas and nurses' stations are stocked with necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Screens for and removes expired products.
  • Records daily oxygen levels.
  • Performs equipment calibrations daily.
  • Assists with equipment maintenance as required.
  • Communicates inventory and equipment needs.
Qualifications
Required Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of relevant experience in customer service in a healthcare setting, including work as a medical receptionist or roles involving patient customer care in a medical office, hospital, nursing home, home health agency, or a closely related area.
Required Licenses and Certifications
  • Ability to obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification within 6 months of employment. Prior to start date applicants must show proof of Medical Assistant certification or proof of registration for examination through one of the following national certifying boards: American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA); or American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA); or National Healthcare Association (NHA); or National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP).
  • BLS and Medical Assistant certification or registration must be maintained for continued employment.
Preferred Qualification
  • Two years of related experience in a medical office, outpatient primary care clinic, hospital, nursing home, home health setting, or a closely related setting.
  • Previous experience in a college healthcare environment.
  • Successful completion of an accredited medical assistant program.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Ability work cooperatively with others.
