Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director, SHS Operations, and the Senior Lead Nurse, the Medical Assistant (MA) performs a variety of skilled Medical Assistant duties and gives direct nursing care to students in the Student Health Center. The incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer medications and immunizations, including injections by mouth, intradermal, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and tuberculosis testing.
  • Take temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration readings, height, and weight, and record other vital signs.
  • Assist in examinations, clinical procedures, and medical treatments under the direction of a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner.
  • Prepare patients for examination and assist the clinician as appropriate.
  • Ensure health care patient care areas are fully stocked, organized, and clean.
  • Make appropriate entries in electronic medical charts (EMR).
  • Assist in orienting/training new nursing staff.

Time Base/Duration of Appointment

Hourly/intermittent on call temporary position. Successful candidates may be appointed for a few days up to one (1) year, depending on the assignment. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

The salary range for this classification is $24.05 to $30.50 per hour.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ideal candidate is a reliable team player with strong oral communication skills who can work well with others in a respectful and professional manner. They should understand basic medical terminology, follow clinic procedures, and stay within the Medical Assistant scope of practice as defined by the Medical Board of California. Attention to detail is required for maintaining accurate medical records, and they must be able to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and SHS policies is essential, along with the ability to use sound judgment and consult with clinicians when needed. The candidate should be comfortable using computers, especially for health information systems, and be able to learn new equipment and procedures quickly. They should be committed to creating cooperative relationships with students, clinicians, and coworkers in a campus-based setting and to communicating with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.

Education and Experience
  • Equivalent to a high school diploma required.
  • One year of experience performing the duties of a medical assistant in an outpatient clinic preferred.
Physical Summary

Heavy work – job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing.
