Medical Assistant - Generalist (Healthcare)

Job Description: The Medical Assistant supports physicians and nurse practitioners by performing various medical tasks. Responsibilities include preparing exam rooms, updating patient charts electronically, assisting with exams and procedures, taking vitals, scheduling appointments, providing patient education, processing orders, inputting test results, making referrals, administering immunizations, and providing backup for front desk duties.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTION AND DUTIES

  1. Assist medical staff in serving patients effectively.
  2. Schedule patient appointments according to established protocols.
  3. Prepare exam rooms for clinician examinations.
  4. Complete EHS charts and superbills, ensuring all diagnosis codes and notations are included; refer errors or exceptions to the provider.
  5. Review patient charts to include all test results, labs, and documentation before examination.
  6. Assign patients to exam rooms and update their status periodically.
  7. Record patient vitals and chief complaints accurately.
  8. Notify the medical practitioner when patients are ready for examination.
  9. Implement precautions for suspected communicable diseases during check-in.
  10. Ensure medical equipment and instruments are cleaned and sanitized before use.

Customer Relations:

  • Provide courteous and respectful care to patients and staff.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to customer requests.
  • Suggest improvements to better meet customer needs.
  • Respond courteously to clinic communications.

Teamwork:

  • Collaborate with department and other staff members.
  • Accept additional responsibilities and demonstrate cooperation.
  • Assist providers, colleagues, and management as needed.
  • Work closely with patients and staff, engaging in problem-solving efforts.
  • Accept feedback professionally.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a medical support role.
  • CPR certification.
  • Medical Assistant Certificate required; Certification as a Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Proficient in electronic medical records systems (EHS and EMR).
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with vendors and providers.
  • Maintain confidentiality and understand medical terminology.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Adhere to HIPAA and confidentiality policies.
  • Work effectively in complex environments.
  • Strong judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Develop effective relationships with patients and staff.
