Inova Health General Surgery East Region in Fairfax seeks a dedicated Medical Assistant 1 for a full-time day shift, Monday through Friday. You will support clinicians with patient flow, record vitals, prepare exam rooms, assist with procedures, and help with basic lab tasks while maintaining a compassionate patient experience.

This role also includes clerical duties, chart organization, and effective communication with patients and the care team.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Experience in a medical group practice or similar setting preferred.
• BLS certification within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Performs general patient care and manages patient flow, records vitals and assists with procedures.
• Assists with exams, phlebotomy, injections, and basic lab tasks.
• Clerical duties: records management, lab/x-ray reports, and form completion.
• Organizes medical records and data entry for encounters.
• Educates patients on testing requirements and care instructions.
• Keeps exam/procedure rooms clean and stocked; ensures supply readiness.
• Participates in quality improvement activities and clinic huddles.

Medical Assistant 1 Job Responsibilities

• Performs general patient care responsibilities including checking schedules and organizing patient flow; recording patient blood pressure, height, and weight; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking, collecting specimens, phlebotomy, administering injections, assisting physicians/nurses; preparing patient for examination and treatment; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls and providing pertinent information.
• Performs pre-visiting planning as indicated by the physician for the vulnerable population as indicated.
• Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include: sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed.
• Organizes medical records, including lab results, progress notes, etc. to ensure the provider has all of the necessary information available during the patient's encounter.
• Scans necessary medical information into the chart readying the chart for the patient's encounter.
• Instructs patient in basic testing requirements, e.g., clean catch urine, EKG, phlebotomy, pap tests, etc.
• Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned which may include: setting up instruments and equipment according to protocol; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits; ordering, sorting, and storing supplies; restocking exam/procedures rooms. Properly disposes of expired medications and supplies. Adheres to and employs appropriate sterile techniques and universal precautions guidelines. Follows guidelines for point-of-care testing, EKG techniques, and phlebotomy, as per manufacturer's requirements for equipment. Ensures equipment is in proper working order. Performs daily checks of equipment assuring it is in proper working order. Checks the environment prior to starting the clinic day to ensure there are no hazards in the hallways, no open containers, and rooms are clean and free of debris. Assists with the identification of actual and potential risks to patient safety. Reports patient safety issues to the physician and practice manager in a timely manner. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinic services. Assists with data collection for quality improvement activities.
• Communicates problems relating to patients and/or staff with the practice manager in an objective and timely manner.
• Actively participates in clinic huddles and offers suggestions to better meet the needs of the patients and the clinic flow.
• Participates actively in quality improvement initiatives and understands the importance of quality improvement.
• May perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

• Education: High School or GED
• Experience: Previous experience in a medical group practice or similar situation
• Certification: Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) within 6 months of hire

• Experience : 1 year of clinical practice experience
