Under direct supervision, assists physician in providing direct patient care and evaluation of patients in an office. Performs direct patient care such as phlebotomy, EKG, specimen collection, wound care, medication administration and vital signs. Maintains supplies and schedules patient appointments. Education required includes HS, GED, or Certificate of training from a nationally recognized Medical Assistant Program and National Certification as a Certified Medical Assistant. Experience includes successful completion of accredited MA training program or 1 year of MA experience and National Certification. Skills required include knowledge of medical terminology, phlebotomy, EKG, specimen collection, medication administration, vital signs, communication skills, ability to distinguish normal from abnormal diagnostic results, and ability to pass a medication calculation test with 85% or better. Licensures include Certificate of training or National Certification and BLS CPR Certification. Physical requirements include ability to walk and stand up to 80% of work time. Working conditions include exposure to disinfectants and human specimens. Principal duties include taking and recording vital signs, routine diagnostic tests, administering medications, preparing patients for exams, recording EKG, maintaining exam schedules, evaluating patients for preventive care, responding to patient questions, assisting patients with dressing, chaperoning during exams, reviewing diagnostic results, cleaning exam rooms, stocking supplies, sterilizing equipment, and performing clerical duties.
