Job description

Job Overview

Position is a flex position, floating to sites at Forest Lake, Fridley and UMMC West Bank Riverside campus.

As a member of the care team, the Medical Assistant supports quality patient- and family-centered care principles through performing a variety of high-level functions within a care team to support the needs of the healthcare team and patients/families. The Medical Assistant will gather information and documents to support the patient visit. The medical assistant is responsible for adhering to all policies, procedures, and practice guidelines, promoting teamwork with all members of the health care team, maintaining complete, timely and accurate clinical documentation for each patient and continually looking for opportunities to improve processes and workflow. This MA position supports the Flex Workforce. Flex workforce employees regularly travel to multiple clinics to fill open shifts and “regular” travel is defined as the expectation to be available to travel 100% at any time to different locations based on the business needs. The length of the assignment at a location will vary based on need (i.e., 1 day for ill call or an extended period of time), which includes the expectation to travel to more than one clinic during the day at a moment’s notice.

Job Expectations:
  1. Delivers care as delegated by the physician/authorized practitioner or RN, to assigned patient population, or individual patient.
  2. Follows the patient’s plan of care.
  3. Prioritizes work based on patient acuity, available resources, patient/family preferences, provider schedule, in collaboration with the physician/authorized practitioner and other health care team members.
  4. Performs high and low risk technical procedures defined by the clinical setting includes medication administration, assistance with CPR, assistance with procedures and may include lab draws.
  5. Recognizes when different approaches may be needed based on age or cultural differences.
  6. Implements assigned aspects of the patient teaching plan.
  7. Documents care in the medical record.
  8. Effectively communicates compliance and concerns to delegating physician/authorized practitioner/RN.
  9. Takes action to assure continuity of care for all assigned patients.
  10. Adheres to all relevant policies, procedures, and practice guidelines.
  11. Responds appropriately to emergent situations.
  12. Functions as care team assistant as needed.
  13. Communicates effectively with other members of the health care team.
  14. Documents care in the medical record.
  15. Communicates verbal and written information in a clear, concise, accurate, and timely manner.
  16. Uses communication approaches appropriate to patient/family needs.
  17. Respect and ensures the confidentiality of all information regarding patients, staff members or Fairview business issues. Shares information only with those who need to know.
  18. Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level of population served.
  19. Partners with patient/caregiver in care/decision making.
  20. Communicates in a respectful manner.
  21. Ensures a safe, secure environment.
  22. Individualizes plan of care to meet patient needs.
  23. Modifies clinical interventions based on population served.
  24. Provides patient education based on assessment of learning needs of patient/caregiver.
  25. Identify opportunities for improvement in workflow.
  26. Participate in meetings to support initiatives.
  27. Communicate appropriately with team members.
  28. Engage in change to improve the work environment and patient experience.

Minimum Qualifications to Fulfill Job Responsibilities:

Required

  1. Education: Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant Program or LPN
  2. Experience: N/A
  3. License/Certification/Registration: AHA BLS

Preferred

  1. Education: N/A
  2. Experience: Ambulatory Care Experience
  3. License/Certification/Registration: AAMA Certification

Additional Requirements: Excellent customer service, public relations, and communication skills. Ability to prioritize and work with a fluctuation in workload while working independently. Demonstrates focus on customer service/patient experience with every interaction. Ability to work as an effective team member to provide exceptional care. Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills. Ability to embrace change and engage in ongoing process improvement. Ability to keyboard and utilize computer programs. Must be flexible to work various shifts and locations as required.
