General Summary
Provides safe, therapeutic, and efficient care and services to patients. Assists in direct patient care, performs treatments, administers medications (if qualified and appropriately supervised), and instructs patients and their families in appropriate care, as directed by their provider. Actively participates in a patient-centered practice by aiding in the development of office workflows that support patient-centered care.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Obtains and documents reason for visit, patient vital signs including temperature, blood pressure, weight, BMI, respirations, and pulse.
- Collects specimens as directed by provider, using appropriate equipment and protocols for collection, processing, handling, and storage. Ensures all specimens are tracked/logged prior to transportation to lab.
- Ensures all patient care areas are stocked with unexpired medical supplies and that equipment is in good working condition with up-to-date biomedical assessments. Properly handles, stores, and cleans instruments, equipment, and supplies per manufacturer guidelines.
- Prepares patients for scheduled procedures by ensuring they are appropriately gowned and that instruments and supplies are set up. Uses Standard Precautions for all patient encounters.
- Arranges for diagnostic and therapeutic services by completing necessary paperwork and scheduling appointments. Tracks, reviews, and monitors follow-up of diagnostic test results under the provider's direction. Relays information from the provider to the patient regarding results and follow-up instructions.
- Under supervision of a licensed nurse or provider, prepares and administers vaccines, medications, and controlled substances/narcotics as prescribed and as skilled competencies permit. Asks screening questions, identifies risks and contraindications, and observes responses.
- Processes prescription requests and refills per protocol.
- Performs basic office procedures, examinations, and tests ordered by the provider and as competency demonstrates (e.g., EKGs, ear lavage, vision tests).
- Provides patients with standard care instructions and education, reviewing with patients and families as directed by providers (e.g., VIS sheets).
- Obtains comprehensive health information from patients/families to review with providers or clinical resources, assisting in determining care urgency or alternative care venues for acute problems. Returns calls promptly.
- Completes pre-visit planning and visit preparation per guidelines. Reviews systems, history of present illness, past medical and social history, updates medication review, and completes office standing orders for chronic and preventive healthcare.
- Manages daily patient flow to accommodate fluctuating volumes and demands. Prioritizes tasks delegated by the care team.
- Under supervision, takes ownership of office functions/process improvements.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of health information. Completes annual mandatory education and compliance training.
- Supports the provider during visits by collecting and entering information, carrying out orders, and completing post-visit education and instructions.
- Maintains an 80% or higher score on annual audits.

Qualifications
Minimum Education:
- Associates Degree in Medical Assisting or Practical Nursing, or
- Diploma Program in Medical Assisting
Work Experience:
- At least 1 year of experience in a primary care or specialty office
Licenses:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire
- Certified Medical Assistant upon hire
Courses and Training:
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program (Diploma), or National Medical Assistant Certification, or American Registry of Medical Assistants Certification, or National Healthcareer Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant upon hire
- Completion of all required education and competency testing for advanced performance upon hire
- Knowledge of medical terminology upon hire
