Summary
Under direct supervision of the provider, this position will be responsible for patient assessment and care, and maintaining appropriate documentation. The role requires basic knowledge of specialty and/or primary care and the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients. The position coordinates care to ensure high quality, compassionate patient outcomes, manages patients at office locations, and acts as liaison with other organizations and departments. Responsibilities include ordering medical, pharmacy, and office supplies, ensuring compliance with MyMichigan Health policies, OSHA guidelines, CLIA regulations, and other relevant agencies. The role includes training new employees, students, and float staff, providing patient education, assisting with specialty care modalities, symptom management, and being available for emergencies. It also encompasses general office duties such as keyboarding, filing, telephone, computer, and equipment management as needed. The expectations may vary slightly depending on the practice assigned, and the immediate supervisor will clarify responsibilities as required.
Responsibilities
- (30%) Triages all calls, schedules daily urgent/emergent add‑ons, receives and relays test results, and supports, directs, and refers patients for consults, testing, and insurance pre‑certification and documentation.
- (30%) Greets patients and/or family, performs routine pre‑examination procedures including vital signs, assesses and records objective and subjective data regarding the presenting condition, updates patient records, reconciles orders, uses secure messaging (if available) and performs medication reconciliation, enters allergy reaction types, and processes refills within scope of certification.
- (20%) Assists provider with examinations and procedures.
- (20%) Prepares and cleans the patient area, sets up equipment, cleans and facilitates room setup after a procedure, disposes of contaminated supplies, and sterilizes medical instruments.
- OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides complete patient assessment as indicated within the scope of the practice.
- Performs patient care measures including injections, minor dressing changes, and obtaining blood specimens.
- Assistant duties may include competency demonstration for procedures such as EKG, PFT, ABI, and NST.
- Maintains a clean and safe environment for patients and coworkers; may be required to travel to satellite clinics.
- Operates necessary computer functions in the office setting: MAPS, MCIR Practice Management, Electronic Medical Records, LIS, Emageon, dictation systems, and other required programs.
- Demonstrates critical thinking for patient management.
- Maintains confidentiality and ensures patient rights in accordance with HIPAA.
- Performs clerical duties such as filing insurance forms, correspondence, arranging hospital admissions, answering the telephone, and updating patient records; orders supplies and medications.
- Accurate documentation and coding in the medical record per policy; participates in annual quality reviews as required.
- Caters to the age‑specific needs of the population served according to departmental standards and policies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Certifications and Licensures
- BLS: Basic Life Support (within 3 months of hire or transfer)
- MA CERT: Medical Assistant – must possess an active certification/licensure, such as Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through AMT, Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through AAMA, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), or equivalent. Prefer completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program. May also hold Medical First Responder, Emergency Medical Tech (Basic/Specialist), Paramedic (state of Michigan), or Registered Radiologic Technologist (ARRT).

Other Information
- Excellent interpersonal skills are required to communicate successfully with individuals and groups at all levels.
- Mandatory OSHA training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.
- Knowledge of medical office policies, practices and procedures is normally acquired through three to five years working in the health care system or a similar setting.

- Dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, and repetitive movements.
- Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0‑33% of the workday) lift or carry 11‑20 lbs., frequently (34‑66% of the workday) 10 lbs., and walk, stand, push, or pull arm/leg controls as needed.
