Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on providing professional and nonprofessional nursing care services in accordance with physician orders. It also involves performing Nursing Support duties such as providing basic care services to patients without an RN or LPN license. Positions in this nursing support work under the direction of physicians, mid-level practitioners, and possibly registered nurses depending on the unit. It is a specialized role that requires knowledge or skills gained through vocational education, training, and experience, most commonly applied to patient care and scientific/laboratory jobs. This role works under moderate supervision, handling routine problems and communicating information that may require some explanation or interpretation.

Job Overview

Under general supervision of licensed personnel, this position is responsible for ensuring continuous, efficient, and smooth patient flow in the outpatient/ambulatory setting. It acts as a patient liaison with clinical and administrative responsibilities, playing an important role in the hospital's revenue cycle, clinical operations, and patient experience. The role involves responding to variations in patient volume, clinician and room availability, and preparing for patient care according to protocols. Assisting with patient care within scope of practice is also part of this role.

Job Description
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of Clinical Program OR Six (6) months of clinical experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Basic Life Support Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of medical office experience.
  • Phlebotomy Certification.
  • Bi-Lingual abilities.
  • Experience with electronic patient record systems.
Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed are general and not exhaustive; other duties may be assigned.

  1. Control and monitor patient flow to maximize provider and room utilization, communicating delays and adjusting as needed.
  2. Prepare medical records for patient visits, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  3. Provide high-quality customer service, ensuring a safe, comfortable, and clean environment.
  4. Assist with patient admission and transition to inpatient units.
  5. Escort patients to exam rooms, prepare them for provider visits, and ensure their comfort and safety.
  6. Assess fall risk and implement safety measures.
  7. Prepare exam rooms according to patient needs.
  8. Assist providers and nurses with exams, treatments, and procedures.
  9. Record vital signs, medication lists, and patient-reported pain levels.
  10. Collect specimens and prepare supplies for provider use.
  11. Perform Point of Care Testing as ordered.
  12. May perform phlebotomy.
  13. Arrange diagnostic testing, surgeries, and admissions as directed.
  14. Assist with billing documentation and ensure proper coding.
  15. Manage outside paperwork, referrals, and authorizations, and notify providers of patient requests.
  16. Follow proper procedures for waste disposal, infection control, and maintaining clinic cleanliness.
  17. Stock and maintain supplies and equipment, monitor inventory and expiration dates.
  18. Participate in quality improvement projects.
  19. Provide administrative support, including coordinating interpreter services and managing communications.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing and walking for up to 80% of the shift.
  • Some lifting, pushing, or pulling.
  • Occasional stress from multiple demands.
  • Exposure to body fluids, infectious diseases, sharps.
  • Possible work area changes to meet patient needs.
  • Frequent contact with patients, families, visitors, and staff.
Skills & Abilities
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and accurately.
  • Basic to moderate computer skills and hospital system navigation.
  • Proficiency in English reading, writing, and spelling.
  • Knowledge of business math and analytical skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of universal precautions and patient handling.
  • Ability to pass competency exams for waived tests.
  • Ability to handle sensitive/confidential information.
  • Knowledge of care across lifespan, including developmental and cultural considerations.
