Job summary

Waterbury Hospital is seeking a float Medical Assistant to join our team in Middlebury, Connecticut. This role involves assisting with primary health care, taking patient histories, performing vital signs, and managing tasks to support physicians and patients.

The ideal candidate will have a High School diploma, experience in a medical office, and possess strong communication skills. Travel will be required between different Alliance Medical locations, and knowledge of medical terminology is essential.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited program for Medical Assistants.
  • Certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants preferred.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in a fast-paced medical office preferred.

Job description

Assists in the delivery of primary health care and patient care management by performing selected clinical and administrative duties. The “float” Medical Assistant will travel between Alliance Medical locations as needed and work with different providers.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists provider in preparing for physicals and minor surgeries. Prepares patients for examination and treatment. Takes patient histories and vital signs, performs phlebotomy and EKG as needed.
  • Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments. Assists with ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment, including sterilization of instruments.
  • Assists with scheduling of tests and treatments and follows through with referrals when indicated.
  • Screens telephone calls for referral to nurse or provider.
  • Maintains patient files, records and other information according to office standards.
  • Implements provider orders under provider direction and notifies patients of results as requested.
  • Remains updated and current on the electronic health record policies and procedures.
  • Attends required meetings and participates in committees and professional development activities. Maintains professional affiliations.
  • Scribe to include history of present illness, review of systems, physical exam findings, diagnostic assessment and plan of care.
  • Maintains patient and office confidentiality.
  • Must be flexible with different work flows in different offices.
  • Performs related work as required.
Supervision Received

Reports directly to the Practice Manager.

Typical Physical Demands

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Involves frequent standing and walking. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 20 pounds. Requires normal visual acuity and hearing. Requires exposure to bodily fluids. Requires the ability to work in a busy medical office environment.

Performance Requirements: (Required knowledge, skills and abilities.)
  • Ability to perform medical assistant duties such as assisting the provider, performing EKG’s and phlebotomy, vital signs and other office testing / procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with medical staff, patients and the public.
  • Ability to follow direction and comply with office policies / procedures.
  • Strong computer skills. Prior experience utilizing medical practice computer systems. Allscripts EMR experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Working knowledge of insurance requirements.
  • Travel to all Alliance Medical locations.
Education: (Acceptable experience and training)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduate of an accredited program for Medical Assistants. Certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants or at least 3 years of relevant experience in a fast-paced medical office highly preferred.
