Job summary

Baylor College of Medicine in Houston is seeking a Medical Assistant for a Float Pool to support multiple BCM clinics. The MA will handle vital signs, venipuncture, injections, EPIC EMR entries, and patient education.

The ideal candidate has 2+ years MA experience, a completing MA program, current MA certification, and BLS. The role requires flexibility, strong communication, and a patient-centered approach with excellent teamwork.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of MA training.
  • Two or more years of relevant MA experience.
  • Current MA certification from a recognized organization.
  • Current BLS certification.

Responsibilities

  • Take vital signs, venipuncture, collect specimens, EKGs, and point-of-care testing.
  • Collect health history and document in EPIC EMR.
  • Administer injections and medications as directed.
  • Prepare exam rooms and maintain instruments and supplies.
  • Schedule tests, procedures, and follow-up visits.
  • Respond to patient inquiries and manage MyChart messages as needed.
  • Maintain clean, organized patient areas and records.

Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA)-Float Pool position is a float position that the MA will be assigned to various BCM clinics/locations. The MA should be proficient in taking vital signs, giving medications by various forms in their scope of practice, EMR, phone etiquette, flexible, and a fast learner. This position requires someone who is flexible, eager to learn, excellent communication skills, great customer service skills, great work ethics and a passion for helping others. Proficient in EMR systems preferably (EPIC). Comfortable with standing and moving around for long periods of time.

Job Duties
  • Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, venipuncture (blood draws), collect specimens, EKGs/ECGs, and laboratory Point of Care Testing.
  • Collects patient health history, performs medication reconciliation and enters information in EPIC.
  • Administer Injections and medications as directed by medical provider.
  • Notes the chief complaint/reason for patient's visit.
  • Prepare equipment, examination rooms and clean instruments as directed.
  • Assists with medical procedures and exams as needed.
  • Instructs patients on general care and medicine procedures.
  • Maintains patient and service rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Schedules patient tests, procedures, and appointments.
  • Conducts patient outreach phone calls and post visit follow-ups.
  • Uses the Ring Central-Live Answer to answer clinical calls (department specific).
  • Responds to routine patient phone calls and MyChart messages and route to RN, ACP or Physician as needed.
  • Performs clerical/administrative responsibilities such as filing and/or scanning patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Takes inventory of clinic supplies and order supplies as needed.
  • Sorts and distributes clinic mail and medical records to the appropriate clinic personnel.
  • Flexible, dependable, hardworking, be adaptable, and willing to work in a float pool position.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two or more years of relevant experience as a Medical Assistant.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, AMCA,,AAH AAMP, or NPS).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.
