Medical Assistant, Expert | UPMC Hillman Cancer Center - Monroeville

Are you an experienced Medical Assistant looking to take the next step in your career? UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Monroeville is seeking a Medical Assistant, Expert to join our compassionate and collaborative oncology team.

Hours: Monday through Friday, daylight hours - no evenings, weekends, or holidays!

In this advanced role, you'll be a key member of a nationally recognized cancer care team, supporting patients throughout their treatment journey while serving as a clinical resource for colleagues. You'll combine hands‑on patient care with leadership responsibilities, helping to ensure exceptional patient experiences and efficient practice operations.

As a Medical Assistant, Expert, you'll room patients, obtain vital signs and medical histories, assist providers with examinations and procedures. You'll also help guide workflows, mentor team members, support quality improvement initiatives, and serve as a trusted resource for both clinical and operational processes.

We are looking for candidates with strong clinical experience, excellent communication skills, and a passion for delivering high-quality patient care. Previous experience working with Epic is strongly preferred, as this role may serve as a departmental resource for Epic workflows and best practices.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with care team members to reach population health management goals of improving patient access to care, reducing number of emergency visits, and decreasing readmissions.
  • Telephonic outreach to patients discharged from the hospital or emergency room to schedule follow up appointments and review medications and treatment plans.
  • Make referrals to members of the extended care team and/or notify provider of post discharge needs or discrepancies in plans of care.
  • Participate in population health outreach to patients and assist with gap closure
  • Provide health education to patients to help improve or maintain a healthy lifestyle
  • Actively promotes patient engagement through wellness guidance and self-management support and promotes patient engagement through wellness guidance and self-management support and promotes patient health literacy through learned motivational interviewing and communication techniques
  • Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in all practice category specific tasks
  • Guides workflow and/or assigns tasks to other clinical staff.
  • Assist management staff with supervisory activities.
  • Participates with creation and implementation of departmental goals, processes and procedures.
  • Mentors, orients and provides ongoing training to current and new staff members.
  • Serve as the department super user for Epic Care.
  • Work directly with Manager to identify opportunities for improvement with regards to Clinical/Non-Clinical functions, Infection Control Procedures, and Patient Assessments
  • Guide routine meetings with staff to communicate procedural changes to improve service quality and patient safety
  • Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with Health Insurance. Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other state and federal regulations.
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
  • Complete forms/requisitions as needed. Schedule appointments. Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Prepare and managing charts to ensure information completed and filed appropriately.
  • Other front office responsibilities, as required.
  • Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol. Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control. Clean according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records. Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms.
  • Check schedules and organizing patient flow. Accompany patients to exam/procedure room. Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc. Collect patient information/history; taking vitals, performing screenings per provider guidelines. Relay instructions to patients/families.
  • Answering calls and providing pertinent information including patient education as directed.
  • Perform phlebotomy, EKG's, and level one labs. Perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure. Assist physicians with procedures. Document patient information into the medical record. Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e. OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health). Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data. Comply with all UPMC Health System policies and procedures. Under the direction and supervision of a physician, administer injectable medication and vaccines when appropriate.*Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • *Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Successfully complete the UPMC preceptor training and serve as a preceptor and mentor to newly hired team members.
  • Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in all practice category specific tasks.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
  • In lieu of the MAS, relevant bachelor's degree accepted.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
