Job summary

Pikeville Medical Center Inc. is seeking a Medical Assistant to join our clinical team in Pikeville, KY. The role involves preparing patients for exams, documenting vitals and histories, and assisting providers during procedures in a high-volume outpatient setting.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for examination and treatment.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, medical histories, medication reconciliation, and chief complaints.
  • Assist physicians during examinations and office procedures.
  • Perform wound care, dressing changes, sutures and staple removal as directed.
  • Apply and manage casts, braces, and orthopedic immobilization devices.
  • Educate patients on use of orthopedic braces and durable medical equipment.
  • Provide patient education on diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and postoperative care.
  • Prepare and maintain sterile fields for procedures.
  • Assist with sterile procedures including joint injections and biopsies.
  • Coordinate and complete preoperative assessments and education.
  • Review lab results, imaging, and preoperative documentation.
  • Triage patient phone calls and communicate with providers.

Description
  • Prepare patients for examination and treatment.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, medical histories, medication reconciliation, and chief complaints.
  • Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners during examinations and office procedures.
  • Perform wound care, dressing changes, suture and staple removal as directed.
  • Apply, remove, and modify casts, splints, braces, and orthopedic immobilization devices.
  • Fit and educate patients on the use of orthopedic braces, boots, slings, walkers, crutches, and other durable medical equipment.
  • Provide patient education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, postoperative care, cast care, wound care, and activity restrictions.
  • Prepare and maintain sterile fields for office procedures.
  • Assist providers during sterile procedures including joint injections, aspirations, fracture reductions, biopsies, and minor surgical procedures.
  • Coordinate and complete preoperative assessments and education.
  • Review laboratory results, imaging, and required preoperative documentation.
  • Answer and triage patient phone calls using clinical judgment and established protocols.
  • Assess patient concerns and communicate appropriately with providers.
  • Accurately document patient assessments, procedures, treatments, and communications within the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Maintain complete, timely, and compliant medical records.
  • Work collaboratively with multiple orthopedic surgeons, advanced practice providers, radiology staff, therapists, surgery schedulers, and ancillary departments.
  • Promote efficient patient flow while maintaining excellent patient care and customer service.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for patients and team members.
  • Assist providers with documentation and order entry as appropriate
  • Reinforce postoperative instructions and follow-up care.
  • Monitor recovery progress through office visits and telephone follow-up.
  • Ensure proper sterilization and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after procedures for safety and comfort.
Requirements

Successful completion of medical assistant program or proof of registry. One year of experience as a medical assistant is preferred. BLS required.

Summary

A non-exempt position responsible for providing care to patients under the supervision of the Clinic Supervisor.
