Job summary

Stamford Health is seeking a Medical Assistant for an outpatient physician practice. The schedule is Monday–Friday with two shift options (8:00–4:00 or 9:00–5:00) and four shifts within a six-week period.

The role provides patient care under supervision, performs basic clerical duties, greets patients, prepares examination rooms, takes vitals, assists with exams and basic lab tasks, schedules procedures, handles calls, and helps maintain smooth clinical flow.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification or Diploma from accredited Medical Assistant program required.
  • Heart Saver or BLS certification required.
  • Two years job experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates strong phone/customer service skills.
  • Effective communication skills in English (verbal and written).
  • Demonstrates willingness to work in a team and adapt to workload changes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care in outpatient physician practice under the direction of the physician, physician assistant, or licensed nurse.
  • Assist with clinical and clerical duties to optimize patient experience within the practice.
  • Greet patients in person or by phone and handle inquiries or referrals.
  • Prepare patients for visits: direct to exam room, provide gowns, assist positioning.
  • Record patient information, medical history, vitals, and visit purpose.
  • Support care delivery: assist with examinations, prepare lab specimens, perform basic tests, sterilize instruments, draw blood, assist with x-rays, ECGs, dressings.
  • Complete records: document examinations, treatments, and test results.
  • Schedule procedures, precertify, and obtain test results.
  • Handle calls and messages for prescriptions, forms, etc.
  • Complete disability and insurance forms.
  • Maintain clinical flow across the practice.

Job Description

This is a Monday-Friday position, can be 8:00am-4:00pm or 9:00am-5:00pm. Requires 4 shifts within a 6 week time period.

Major Accountabilities / Critical Responsibilities
  • Provide patient care in outpatient physician practice under the direction of the practicing physician, physician assistant, or licensed nurse.
  • Assist with clinical and clerical duties to ensure optimization of patient experience within the practice.
  • Welcomes patients by greeting them, in person or on the telephone; answering or referring inquiries.
  • Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room; providing examination gowns and drapes; helping them to position themselves for the examination and/or treatment; arranging examining room instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical history; taking vital signs; confirming purpose of visit or treatment.
  • Supports patient care delivery by helping health care providers during examinations; preparing laboratory specimens; performing basic laboratory tests on the premises; disposing of contaminated supplies; sterilizing medical instruments; drawing blood; preparing patients for x-rays; taking electrocardiograms; removing sutures; changing dressings.
  • Completes records by recording patient examination, treatment, and test results.
  • Schedule hospital procedures, surgeries and tests. Precert and obtain test results.
  • Handle phone calls and messages for prescriptions, notes, forms, etc.
  • Complete disability and insurance forms.
  • Maintain clinical flow in all areas of the practice.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification or Diploma from accredited Medical Assistant school/program required.
  • National Certification preferred.
  • Heart Saver OR BLS Certification required
  • Two years job experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrate basic computer skills ( MS Office, Word, Excel)
  • Demonstrates strong phone/customer service skills
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written English proficiency required
  • Demonstrate willingness to work in a team environment.
  • Demonstrate flexibility due to unexpected changes in workload.
