Job description

Medical Assistant Apprenticeship - work 24hrs/wk, class 16hrs/wk

Shift: Days

This program will run from January 2026 through December 2026.

The Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program offers an opportunity to work and attend school for Medical Assisting simultaneously. You will hold a benefit-eligible 0.6 FTE position, working 24 hours per week (3 days), and attend classes for 16 hours per week (2 days). The program allows you to gain practical on-the-job experience alongside classroom learning. Work locations will vary between primary care and specialty offices.

General Summary:

Under the supervision of a registered/certified medical assistant (MA) and/or other licensed clinical professionals, and within the training parameters, the MA Apprentice will perform assigned duties while participating in the MA Apprentice Program. This includes office practices such as rooming patients, notifying patients of results, communicating provider recommendations via electronic medical records and phone, following up on symptoms, and learning front desk procedures. The experience aligns with classroom lessons.

Requirements:
  • Current student enrolled in a Medical Assistant Apprentice program
  • BLS/CPR (Healthcare Provider) certification required – to be completed during the program
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word)
  • Flexibility in staffing patterns and conflict resolution
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Strong interpersonal skills
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  1. Review and document patient vital signs and medical information (e.g., allergies, physical and emotional condition). This includes vital signs, height, weight, and subjective complaints, which will be documented in the Electronic Medical Record and communicated to the provider.
  2. Support and assist physicians during patient examinations and procedures.
  3. Complete documentation and charting of clinical test results.
  4. Obtain lab specimens and process them internally or externally as required. Perform in-office testing (e.g., EKG, Holter monitor).
  5. Assist with medication administration as directed by the provider.
  6. Help patients schedule follow-ups, referrals, and future appointments.
  7. Perform additional duties as assigned, including maintaining current knowledge of standards of care, pursuing continuing education, and participating in committees or work groups as needed.
