Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

The Medical Assistant Apprentice is a student in training (MA Trainee), mentored by a Fred Hutch Certified Medical Assistant (MA-C). The role prepares the trainee to take the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam through the National Healthcareer Association. The apprentice works alongside a preceptor, learning to manage patient flow, perform clinical duties, and participate as a team member. The program aims for 2000 hours of training over one year, sponsored by WACMHC and accredited through SSC.

This position is located at Overlake Cancer Center, Bellevue. The role requires working 8-hour shifts, Monday-Friday, starting as early as 7:00am.

Responsibilities

• Manage patient flow: room patients and families into exam or procedure areas.
• Perform initial patient assessments: vital signs, pain assessment, fall risk.
• Conduct clerical tasks, patient transport, and maintain exam rooms.
• Recognize symptoms of common illnesses and escalate as needed.
• Act as liaison between patients and providers, delivering customer service.
• Assist with procedures: prepare and set up for clinical procedures.

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent), renewal every two years.
• Willingness to participate in process improvement initiatives.
• Proficient in email and word processing.
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
• Multitasking, prioritizing, and problem-solving skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication.
• Follow directions and seek help when needed.
• Identify learning needs and pursue growth opportunities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Active DOH registration as MA-R or CNA.
• Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies per protocol.
• Experience with Electronic Medical Records.

The hourly pay range is $24.02 to $34.19, based on experience and qualifications.
