Department Description

The Pioneer Square Downtown Programs focus on Harborview's mission population to address health equity issues by increasing access to care in our unique primary care settings, homeless shelters, housing programs or community settings for unhoused and vulnerably housed people. The Pioneer Square Downtown Programs Field Based team embeds providers, RNs and mental health practitioners throughout sites from South Seattle to North Seattle including homeless shelters and low-income supportive housing units. Our team includes two outreach teams (Vital and Homeless Palliative care) as well as providers at the Needle Exchange and a mental health center downtown.

This position is a part of our Healthcare and Housing program but could be redeployed to other sites/programs within the Pioneer Square Downtown Programs. The MA in this role supports the medical team and residents of DESC's Estelle House in the Rainier Valley. DESC's The Estelle provides permanent supportive housing for 91 formerly homeless individuals living with serious mental illness or other disabling conditions. As a result of a unique partnership between DESC and Harborview Medical Center, The Estelle provides supportive housing and quality healthcare within the same building. Fifteen units are dedicated to people exiting the hospital with healthcare needs that exceed the services offered in conventional residential care systems, and on-site healthcare is available to all residents. The ideal candidate will be well versed in Harm Reduction and Trauma Informed Care.

Primary Responsibilities

Ensure exam rooms are stocked, clean and ready for patients

Perform wound care and phlebotomy

Prepare medical record for clinic visit

Coordinate communication flow in the clinic including answering and directing telephone inquiries to the appropriate individual

Take initiative to maintain patient flow for on-site provider/nurse

Arrange for lab specimens to be transported to HMC lab

Schedule appointments for patients and provide care coordination as directed by the nurse onsite

Required Position Qualifications

Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board OR equivalent

Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation within 6-months of hire. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment

Valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider CPR card
