Job summary

Kaiser Permanente is seeking a Medical Assistant to support physicians in ambulatory settings, preparing patients, performing rooming and screening, and assisting with procedures and virtual visits.

The role requires phlebotomy training and completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program, plus strong patient communication and teamwork within a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant Program that includes phlebotomy training.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the physician in providing comprehensive medical care to targeted patient population in the ambulatory clinic setting by preparing the patient for the medical examination.
  • Performing rooming-in, screening activities and patient histories for the appropriate patient population.
  • Performing assigned clinical tasks and/or procedures.
  • Set up patient for virtual visit in clinic.
  • Turnover room following patient visit.
  • Serve as chaperone for exams if requested by patient.
  • Assisting with scheduling follow-up appointments and activities as recommended by the physician.
  • Performs clinical tasks and/or procedures appropriate to targeted patient population under the delegation and supervision of a licensed physician.
  • Immediately notifies physician or other licensed health care provider of patients observed to be in distress.
  • Documents all care given and actions taken on behalf of the patient in KP HealthConnect.
  • Facilitates smooth and efficient operation of the clinical department by monitoring the flow of patients and intervening as appropriate to minimize wait times and promote a positive experience for the patient.
  • Assists with inventory and requisition of required supplies; keeps exam and procedure rooms adequately stocked at all times.
  • Engages in positive interactions with Kaiser Permanente members, visitors and fellow staff members at all times.
  • Monitor and manage refrigerated medications under the supervision of the practicing physician.
  • Serves and protects the practice by adhering to professional standards; facility policies and procedures; and federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Administers medications per KP policy and using the 5 rights of medication administration.
  • Performs basic diagnostic and laboratory tests and specimen collection per KP policy and CLIA regulations.
  • Assist with routine patient education and self-care instructions as directed by providers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience

Education
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant Program that includes phlebotomy training.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration
  • NCCT National Certified Medical Assistant OR Clinical Medical Assistant Certification from American Medical Certification Association OR Certified Clinical Medical Assistant from National Healthcareer Association OR Registered Medical Assistant from American Medical Technologists OR Medical Assistant Certificate from American Association of Medical Assistants

  • Basic Life Support from American Heart Association
Additional Requirements
  • Completion of all Kaiser Permanente Medical Assistant required competencies within the first sixty (60) days of employment, and annually thereafter.
  • Effective interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Effective communication (written and oral) skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of applicable computer software.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
  • Must maintain certifications current and complete annual CEUs to meet CLIA regulations and/or licensing requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum one (1) year of full-time experience as a nursing/medical assistant OR relevant experience OR successful completion of a Kaiser Permanente externship preferred.
  • Proficiency in documenting in an electronic medical record system preferred.
