Job description

Hennepin Healthcare is hiring for a Medical Assistant at our Whittier Clinic in Minneapolis. This benefit-eligible role is union represented and primarily works day shift. Opportunities for tuition reimbursement and advancement.
***This opening is currently set to work Monday-Friday day hours but may expand to include evenings and weekends as we grow.

Hennepin Healthcare's AFSCME pay range(s):
- Medical Assistants: $23.56-$30.39
Offers are based on prior experience in the respective roles and/or relevant patient-facing roles (non-administrative).

A sign-on bonus is available for eligible external MA or LPN candidates (current employees and former employees returning to HHS within one year are ineligible). The sign-on bonus amount is $1,500 for uncertified Medical Assistants and $3,000 for Medical Assistants certified/registered through the AAMA, AMT, or NHCA.

SUMMARY

Under the direction/ delegation of a physician(s) or other clinical care team members, the Medical Assistant contributes to the health and well-being of patients by providing quality and competent patient & family centered care/ services that meet HCMC and departmental standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Perform assigned clinical tasks under the direction of a physician or other providers including: administer medications, injections, and immunizations, spirometry, tympanometry, apply minor dressings and splints, connect patients to portable monitors e.g. pulse oximetry, nebulization, glucose monitoring, and urethral catheterization and other clinical duties as delegated within the Medical Assistant scope of practice.
  2. Set up for and provide direct assistance to physicians and other licensed care providers with medical examinations and procedures including: colposcopy, flex sigmoidoscopy, minor surgery.
  3. Perform specimen collection including: blood draws, sputum samples, and urine samples.
  4. Perform hearing and vision screens and developmental testing.
  5. Review patient information as required by the rooming process and competently enter information into the patient medical record.
  6. Perform basic patient care activities including: place patients in rooms, take and chart vital signs.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Diploma or Associate’s Degree from an accredited Medical Assistant school (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools) that includes a clinical externship or a formal medical services training program of the United States Armed Forces, as evidenced through educational transcripts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience with EPIC and/or similar electronic health record.
  2. Proficient with Microsoft Office Software.
  3. Related experience or HHS externship.
  4. Possesses active certification by the AAMA or active registration by the AMT at hire.
  5. Bilingual in English and at least one other language commonly spoken by HHS patients.

Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:

  1. Ability to perform specialized clinical tasks and procedures in alignment with HHS standards.
  2. Knowledge of medical terminology.
  3. Ability to effectively interview patients and collect information required to obtain medical history and to accurately register and/or schedule patients.
  4. Ability to work cohesively and respectfully with a diverse workforce and patient population.
  5. Ability to prioritize, organize, and communicate with multidisciplinary staff.
  6. Basic computer knowledge.
  7. Ability to read and follow written instructions; understand and communicate verbal and written information.
  8. Ability to perform job duties that meet departmental performance expectations as well as HHS standards related to quality, accuracy, productivity, patient and family centered care, customer service, etc.

License/Certifications:

  1. Credentialed or Registered through AAMA, AMT, or NHCA within thirteen (13) months of employment.
  2. Must have and maintain valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certification or the ability to obtain this within the first three months of employment.
