Job summary

Cowboyuc is seeking a dedicated Medical Assistant to support provider-directed patient care and perform clerical and environmental tasks in a clinic setting. You will greet and direct patients, verify health histories, update records, and assist with routine procedures.

Responsibilities include vitals, injections (non-narcotics), EKGs, minor surgical assistance, specimen handling, and maintaining infection control in exam rooms. Experience is preferred, with training provided as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a formal Medical Assistant training program with certification/registration.
  • Current AHA BLS certification.
  • Experience with direct patient care is preferred but not required; on-the-job training available.

Responsibilities

  • Greet, screen, schedule, and direct patients to exam rooms.
  • Obtain, verify, and update patient information and health history.
  • Enter patient data into the medical record, including current medications, per patient report.
  • Assist patients with ambulation, transfers, device instruction, ADLs, and body mechanics.
  • Obtain vital signs, basic wound care, and perform phlebotomy and CLIA-waived testing as directed.
  • Administer SC/IM/ID injections (excluding narcotics).
  • Place ECG electrodes and obtain EKG readings.
  • Assist with minor procedures; prepare/clean surgical trays; post-op care and suture removal.
  • Handle specimens (urine, throat, vaginal, stool, sputum) per protocol.
  • Set up instruments, maintain aseptic technique, and restock exam rooms.
  • Process and send/receive records, labs, referrals, and forms; verify insurance and pre-authorizations; act as backup receptionist.

Job description

The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting with provider directed patient care as well as handling clerical and environmental tasks directed in the clinic setting.

In this position you will:
  • Greet, screen, schedule, and direct patients to exam rooms
  • Obtain, verify, and update patient information and health history
  • Collect and chart patient information into the medical record as reported by the patient, to include a review of the current medication list
Patient care responsibilities may include:
  • Assist patients with ambulation, transfers, assistive device instruction, body mechanic instruction, and activities of daily living
  • Obtain patient vital signs, administer basic wound and first aid, therapeutic modalities, i.e. nebulizer treatment, etc., phlebotomy and point of care testing (including CLIA-waived testing)
  • Administer subcutaneous injection, intramuscular injection, and intradermal injection, and medication administration (with theexception of narcotics)
  • Electrocardiography includes placement of electrodes and obtaining EKG
  • Minor surgery assists, includes surgical tray set-up pre/post-surgical care, and suture removal
  • Specimen handling; i.e. urine, throat, vaginal, stool, and sputum
Environmental responsibilities may include:
  • Set-up instruments and equipment according to department protocols
  • Aseptic/sterile technique and basic decontamination, instrument wrapping, cleaning of exam/procedure room/instruments/and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control requirements
  • Ordering, sorting, storing supplies, and restocking exam/procedure rooms
Clerical responsibilities may include:
  • Sending/receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital or clinic notes, referral information, and completing forms/requisitions as needed to ensure provider availability
  • Scheduling appointments, verifying insurance coverage and pre-authorizations, managing and updating charts to ensure information is complete and filed appropriately
  • Act as the backup receptionist
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficient with MS Office, Outlook and Internet Explorer
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrate an independent work initiative and sound judgment
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Knowledge of health care field and medical office protocols/procedures
  • Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to particular medical practice
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Current AHA BLS
  • Completion of a formal Medical Assistant training program and Certification or Registration as a Medical Assistant
  • Experience with direct patient care/procedures (i.e. blood draws, injections, vaccines, etc) is preferred but not required. We will train the right person.
