Job summary

UCSF Health is seeking a Medical Assistant to support patient care in a fast-paced Ambulatory Services setting across UCSF sites. Under supervision, you will assist with exams, patient flow, and front/back office duties including scheduling, insurance verification, and authorizations.

Ideal candidates have MA certification, CPR, strong computer skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with physicians and patients.

Qualifications

Job Description

Under supervision of the Nurse Manager, MA Supervisor, and Charge Nurses, guided by policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services, the Medical Assistant assists in the delivery of care to patients being seen in the practice. They will perform assigned patient care procedures in support of the care services provided to patients within the practice. They are required to adhere to the Telephone and House Standards as adopted by the department. The assistant also assists with front and back office responsibilities, which include scheduling, pre-registering, verifying insurance, obtaining referrals and authorizations, and coordinating required medical and financial information. They work as a team member with other staff and consistently project a professional, caring, and courteous demeanor.

The Medical Assistant is responsible for efficient patient flow, supporting multiple physicians, communicating with referring physicians, handling insurance authorizations, and other administrative duties. They must be flexible to work at all UCSF sites and may float to Pediatric Medical Specialties as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitors patient flow in and out of clinic; obtains vital signs, height, weight, pain screening, documentation, and may room the patient.
  • Assist nurses and providers in preparation for exams and equipment (e.g., biopsy/PAP).
  • Assist with procedures as required for the department specialty.
  • Perform basket functions related to patient messages, labs, authorizations.
  • Act as chaperone as needed; notify providers of patient delays; communicate delays to front office and assist patients with complaints using conflict‑management skills.
  • Other duties as assigned, including completing referrals, obtaining authorizations, and writing patient communications.
  • Maintain clean, well‑stocked exam rooms and order/maintain supplies.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.
  • Lead and participate in unit practice councils/committees; serve as superuser/resource for process improvements.

  • Use effective communication skills with patients and staff; demonstrate proper telephone techniques and etiquette; escort patients or family members as needed.

  • Know the location of the Environment of Care Manual and report unsafe conditions.
  • Protect the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.
Other Functions and Responsibilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Obtain specimens and perform POCT, including QA/QC and EKGs.
  • Maintain mandatory logs (temperature logs, POCT logs, crash cart, emergency kit).
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program or equivalent education and experience.
  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification.
  • Knowledge of insurance verification and authorizations.
  • Ability to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods of time.
  • Strong computer skills in Word and Excel.
  • Strong organizational, problem‑solving, verbal, interpersonal, and writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team physicians and referring physicians.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual or multilingual capability.
  • National certification as a Medical Assistant.
  • Experience with Cadence Scheduling, Registration, and electronic health records.
  • Two or more years of Medical Assistant experience.
Required Licenses/Certifications
  • CPR/BLS through AHA.
  • Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program.
Populations Served

Demonstrated ability to provide appropriate care based on individual needs, including age groups: Infant, Child, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric.
