Job summary

University Health is seeking a Medical Assistant to provide direct and indirect patient care and perform clerical duties in a busy clinical setting. The role requires accurate data collection, vital signs, and support for CLIA waived labs, with emphasis on compassionate patient service.

You will administer medications and immunizations per policy, document nursing charges, schedule appointments, relay referrals, and assist with clerical tasks to keep the clinic running smoothly.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Medical Assistant diploma or certification required.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification.
  • National certification as a registered Medical Assistant preferred.
  • One year of clinic/ambulatory care experience preferred.
  • Cashier training/initial probation period completion required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care as needed.
  • Collect, interpret, and document patient information accurately.
  • Perform CLIA-waived labs such as urine tests and beta HCG.
  • Take vital signs and collect specimens.
  • Administer medications and immunizations per policy.
  • Provide clerical support: scheduling, referrals, and billing.
  • Remind patients by phone and support age-specific care needs.
  • Adapt care for diverse patient needs and uphold service standards.

We are looking for a Medical Assistant to provide direct and indirect patient care activities and perform clerical duties.

The Role
  • Cares for comfort and personal needs of patients.
  • a. Provides direct patient care as needed.
  • b. Collects, interprets and documents information related to patient care accurately and efficiently.
  • Performs procedures as directed by the Medical Director. (E, 10%)
  • Maintains quality control logs in area of assignment for CLIA waived labs.
  • Performs CLIA waived labs such as Accu-checks, Urine Beta HCG, Dipstick UA, etc.
  • b. Takes vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure).
  • c. Collects blood, urine, stool and sputum specimens
  • Administers medications and immunizations in accordance with clinic policy.
  • Documents and bills appropriately for all nursing charges
  • Provides clerical support to include preparing lab requests, scheduling appointments, contacting patient’s by telephone to reschedule clinic cancelled appointments, obtaining referral authorization for initial visit and any requested follow-up visits to Specialty Care Physician. Informs patients when referral is authorized and facilitates scheduling of specialty appointments and/or ancillary services and other computer functions as applicable
  • Perform telephone call reminders for scheduled appointments.
  • Demonstrates competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the age-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.
  • Appropriately adapts assigned patient assessment, treatment and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific and other developmental needs of each patient served.
  • Supports University Health System mission, vision and values. Demonstrates established customer service behaviors and standards. Treats all customers with courtesy, dignity, respect and professionalism.
Requirements

High school diploma or GED is required.

Medical Assistant diploma from an accredited school or certification from an approved credentialing body for medical assistants is required.

Must have current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) Card.

National certification as a registered Medical Assistant is preferred.

One-year experience in a clinic, doctor's office or ambulatory care setting is preferred

Designated cash handlers must successfully complete the Patient Services Cashier course and be designated as a Patient Services Cashier during the initial probationary period.
