Job summary

University Health is seeking a Medical Assistant to provide direct and indirect patient care and to perform clerical duties within our San Antonio area network. The role involves direct patient interactions, specimen collection, basic lab work, immunizations, and documentation in the medical record.

Requirements include a Medical Assistant diploma or certification, current BLS, and typically one year of clinic experience. A cash handler designation may be needed during probation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Medical Assistant diploma or certification required.
• Current American Heart Association BLS card.
• National certification as a Medical Assistant preferred.
• One-year experience in a clinic, doctor's office or ambulatory care setting preferred.
• Designated cash handlers must complete the Patient Services Cashier course and be designated during probation.

Responsibilities

• Cares for comfort and personal needs of patients.
• Provides direct patient care as needed.
• Collects, interprets and documents information related to patient care accurately.
• Performs procedures as directed by the Medical Director (E, 10%).
• Maintains quality control logs for CLIA waived labs.
• Performs CLIA waived labs such as Accu-checks, Urine Beta HCG, Dipstick UA, etc.
• Takes vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure).
• Collects blood, urine, stool and sputum specimens.
• Administers medications and immunizations per clinic policy.
• Documents and bills nursing charges.
• Provides clerical support: scheduling, referrals, reminders, calling patients re cancellations, and other computer functions.
• Performs telephone appointment reminders.
• Demonstrates competence to meet age-specific needs of patients.
• Adapts care methods to patient’s developmental needs.
• Supports University Health System mission and values; demonstrates customer service and professionalism.

The Role

• Cares for comfort and personal needs of patients.
• a. Provides direct patient care as needed.
• b. Collects, interprets and documents information related to patient care accurately and efficiently.
• Performs procedures as directed by the Medical Director. (E, 10%)
• Maintains quality control logs in area of assignment for CLIA waived labs.
• Performs CLIA waived labs such as Accu-checks, Urine Beta HCG, Dipstick UA, etc.
• b. Takes vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure).
• c. Collects blood, urine, stool and sputum specimens
• Administers medications and immunizations in accordance with clinic policy.
• Documents and bills appropriately for all nursing charges
• Provides clerical support to include preparing lab requests, scheduling appointments, contacting patient’s by telephone to reschedule clinic cancelled appointments, obtaining referral authorization for initial visit and any requested follow-up visits to Specialty Care Physician. Informs patients when referral is authorized and facilitates scheduling of specialty appointments and/or ancillary services and other computer functions as applicable
• Perform telephone call reminders for scheduled appointments.
• Demonstrates competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the age-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.
• Appropriately adapts assigned patient assessment, treatment and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific and other developmental needs of each patient served.
• Supports University Health System mission, vision and values. Demonstrates established customer service behaviors and standards. Treats all customers with courtesy, dignity, respect and professionalism.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED is required.

Medical Assistant diploma from an accredited school or certification from an approved credentialing body for medical assistants is required.

Must have current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) Card.

National certification as a registered Medical Assistant is preferred.

One-year experience in a clinic, doctor's office or ambulatory care setting is preferred

Designated cash handlers must successfully complete the Patient Services Cashier course and be designated as a Patient Services Cashier during the initial probationary period.
