Position Overview

Under the direct supervision of the Patient Care Manager and in collaboration with medical staff providers, the Medical Assistant directly assists in the examination and treatment of clinic patients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare exam room, ensure room is clean and all needed supplies are available for the provider.
  • Escorts patients to exam room, documents chief complaint, records vital signs, gathers medical history, family history, social history, and enters other relevant information in patients’ electronic health records.
  • Performs medication reconciliation and reviews allergy information at every visit.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments as needed.
  • Operates electrocardiograph (EKG) machine and other clinical equipment as needed.
  • Administers medication including injectable, performs routine lab tests and administers treatment as ordered by the provider and documents in the medical record.
  • Anticipates the need for and performs Point of Care tests (POCT), including but not limited to CLIA waived tests like dipstick urinalysis, urine pregnancy tests, hemoglobin A1c, random blood glucose, and rapid strep tests with accuracy and communicate with provider in a timely manner.
  • Assists in examination and treatment of patients under direction of Provider.
  • Must have knowledge about specimen and blood collection devices.
  • Administers immunizations, documents on patients’ medical records and updates the state immunization registry. Informs vaccine coordinator about vaccine inventory needs on an ongoing basis and supports inventory management.
  • Completes medication prior authorizations and appropriately addresses prescription refill requests.
  • Performs pre-visit planning and completes basic gaps in care.
  • Communicates normal laboratory test results to patients as directed by provider.
  • Maintains clean, safely equipped and adequately supplied examination room. Inventories clinical supplies and maintain desired inventory levels.
  • Assures that onsite medication is not expired and expired medication is disposed of appropriately.
  • Comply with all OSHA requirements and always adheres to Universal Precautions.
  • Store specimens for subsequent processing and prepare specimens for transport to other laboratories. Always follow safety guidelines in accordance with the Universal Blood and Body Fluid Precautions.
  • Respond to in-person, electronic, and telephone requests from providers, patients, and clinical staff.
  • Clean working surfaces and disposes of biohazardous waste in accordance with MFC policy.
  • Completes patient check-out process according to protocol.
  • Assists Pod Leads with maintaining workflow.
  • Actively works to improve practice performance on Quality incentives including but not limited to Provider Dashboard, PCMH, and Health Plan incentives.
  • Regular and prompt attendance at work.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Education and Licensure
