Job summary

MyMichigan Health is seeking a Medical Assistant to support providers in a physician clinic setting. Under supervision, you will assess patients, document accurately, coordinate care, and educate patients while performing general office duties.

The role requires 3–5 years in healthcare, strong communication, OSHA training, and the ability to travel to satellite clinics if needed. You will operate EMR and practice management systems and maintain a safe patient environment.

Job description

Overview

Under direct supervision of the provider, the medical assistant will assess and care for patients, maintain accurate documentation, coordinate care, train new staff, provide patient education, and perform general office duties as needed.

Responsibilities (Total Allocation)
  • (30%) Triages calls, schedules urgent/emergent add‑ons, receives and relays test results, supports consults, testing, and insurance pre‑certification.
  • (30%) Greets patients/family, performs vital sign checks and administrative tasks, maintains accurate patient records, reconciles medication orders, and processes refills within scope.
  • (20%) Assists provider with examinations and procedures.
  • (20%) Prepares and cleans patient areas, sets up equipment, cleans rooms after procedures, disposes contaminated supplies, and sterilizes instruments.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides comprehensive patient assessment as scoped by practice.
  • Performs injections, minor dressing changes, and blood specimen collection; assists with EKG, PFT, ABI, and NST as required.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment; may travel to satellite clinics.
  • Operates MAPS, MCIR Practice Management, EMR, LIS, Emageon, dictation, and related office software.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking for patient management.
  • Ensures confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Performs clerical duties (filing insurance forms, correspondence, arranging admissions, answering phones).
  • Orders supplies and medications; documents coding per policy.
  • Participates in annual quality reviews as required.
Certifications and Licensures
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – AMT
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – AAMA or equivalent (CCMA, etc.)
  • Medical First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician (Basic/Specialist), or Paramedic – State of Michigan
  • Registered Radiologic Technologist – ARRT
  • Completion of an accredited medical assistant program (preferred)
Required Education

High school diploma or GED.

Experience, Training, and Skills

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact with individuals at all levels. Mandatory OSHA training annually. Knowledge of medical office policies and procedures, typically gained through three to five years in a healthcare setting.

Previous Experience in a Physician Clinic Setting Preferred

Preferred experience in a physician clinic environment.

Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Exposure to stressful situations, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including latex.
  • Mobility throughout facility with or without assistance; perform job functions as outlined.
  • Visual and hearing acuity, with or without assistive devices.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and postural changes; may kneel or crouch.
  • Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens; adherence to blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing protocols.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, remain alert.
  • Dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, manipulating objects.

Physical Demand Level: Light. Must occasionally lift or carry 11–20 lbs. (0–33 % of the workday) and frequently lift 10 lbs. (34–66 % of the workday) and/or walk/stand/push/pull.
