Position Summary

This position is eligible for a Sign On Bonus of $2,000 to be paid in two installments:
• $1,000 within 30 days of your hire date
• $1,000 12 months after hire date

Qualified applicants must be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements. A newly hired permanent full‑time or permanent part‑time (more than 20 hours a week) employee is eligible for a sign‑on bonus (the bonus will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).

Ineligible applicants include those who have held a SHRA position in North Carolina State government (including the judicial system or the University of North Carolina system) within the last 12 months, have previously received a sign‑on bonus from any North Carolina State agency or university, or for whom UNC‑CH has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.

Job Duties

The Medical Assistant position performs administrative and patient‑care tasks, supportive counseling, and a variety of treatments under the close supervision of a Registered Nurse or Physician. Tasks include maintaining the patient care environment, performing routine clerical functions, transporting and moving patients, obtaining and recording pertinent health information, maintaining patient data, and providing information to patients and families. The role is utilized in primary care, gynecology, same‑day care, after‑hours, mini‑clinic, and sports medicine settings.

The position requires completion of an approved Medical Assistant program and certification or registration to practice as a Medical Assistant. Options include certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), registration through the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or as a Clinical Medical Assistant by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

• Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing or certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

Management Preferences
  • Experience in an ambulatory health care/office‑based setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand verbal or written instruction to include medical orders, written agency policies and detailed procedures, reference manuals, and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Attention to detail, precision, exactness, and accuracy in practice.
  • Ability to share duties and responsibilities and contribute to a team atmosphere to work toward common organizational goals.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements

Daily physical effort and stamina are required for the delivery of direct and indirect patient care. Examples include transporting, bending, lifting, standing for long periods of time, and monitoring patient demand throughout the clinics that require extensive walking throughout the workday.

Potential exposures include:
• Direct exposure to infectious diseases such as meningitis, mononucleosis, AIDS, Hepatitis, Streptococcal infections, sexually transmitted infections, and upper respiratory infections. Safeguards include universal blood and body fluid precautions, personal protective equipment, and mandatory occupational safety exposure training.
• Distressing events such as exposure to violent, aggressive, and psychotic patients that may lead to potential harm. Safeguards include immediate access to campus police and in‑house security guards.
• Injuries from the physical effort required. Safeguards include ongoing education on proper body mechanics.
• Visual acuity and manual dexterity are essential for tasks such as collecting vital signs, reading charts, documenting, and applying dressings.
