Job description

Position Summary

Medical Assistant in the Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition Clinic. Supports both clinical and administrative areas under the supervision of a licensed Nurse or Provider. Assists with patient registration, scheduling, verification of demographic and financial information, and facilitates patient flow in the ambulatory setting.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties
  1. Deliver care in a non‑judgmental, non‑discriminatory manner, respecting patient rights and confidentiality.
  2. Collaborate with the licensed nurse/clinic manager as part of the interdisciplinary team to determine work assignments and priorities, and communicate task status and patient data findings.
  3. Monitor patient flow, including waiting room activity, and communicate wait‑time updates to patients and staff.
  4. Conduct pre‑visit chart reviews and preparations, identify and document patient care needs, enter orders for labs and tests per clinic protocols.
  5. Greet patients, escort them to exam rooms, and use accurate medical terminology and abbreviations for documentation.
  6. Assist with intake activities: verify patient identifiers, record vital signs, chief complaint, history, allergies, smoking status, current medications, and immunization records; instruct patients on provider preparation; facilitate special equipment or supplies; administer health screens and questionnaires; update pharmacy information; and document in the medical record.
  7. Collect, label, send, and deliver specimens with appropriate laboratory slips or requisitions.
  8. Identify emergency or crisis situations and initiate appropriate response, including immediate communication to the licensed nurse or physician.
  9. Maintain competency in technical skills (e.g., cast/splint care, urine pH, glucose finger‑stick, POCT, visual acuity, EKG, hearing test, patient glucometer downloads, biopsy set‑up, sutures, and phlebotomy).
  10. Provide basic skin care, wound care, and diabetic foot care; arrange for RN to assess dressings and assistance with sterile procedures such as biopsies, IUD insertion, and colonoscopy prep.
  11. Perform basic equipment care and restock supplies; clean and decontaminate equipment; maintain inventory logs.
  12. Utilize the population health management registry for preventative outreach and reminder calls or letters for screenings and tests.
  13. Support isolation procedures and coordinate with licensed personnel for patient isolation.
  14. Assist with patient visit completion: print disposition forms, education materials, and support prior authorization processes as directed.
  15. Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations including DPH, TJC, Fire Codes, OSHA, and other applicable guidelines.
  16. Comply with HIPAA and all confidentiality protocols.
  17. Perform additional duties as needed to support the clinic’s operations.
Advanced Clinical Activities
  • Assist with wound grafting, MOHS surgery, excisional surgery, laser treatment, Cool/Sculpting, cosmetic procedures (peels, fillers), urodynamic studies, and low‑Dye taping.
  • Perform sutures removals, phlebotomy, and other medical procedures requiring additional training or certification.
Clerical Support
  • Handle registration, scheduling, demographic and billing data entry, insurance verification, and co‑payment collection.
  • Ensure accurate data entry and maintain patient records, including assigning MRNs and supporting duplicate record identification.
  • Manage clinical files, screen for lab, x‑ray, and other results, and communicate findings to the care team.
  • Stamp and date charts, prepare site‑specific forms, and manage clinic mail.
  • Coordinate cross‑booking for linked services, reschedule cancellations, and track borrowed equipment.
Job Requirements – Education

High school diploma or GED plus at least one of the following: completion of a medical assistant program, a second medical‑surgical clinical rotation, or an equivalent combination of education and healthcare‑related experience.

Compensation
