Job description

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Practice Manager, the Medical Assistant/Patient Service Specialist functions as a member of the clinical and administrative team, completing assigned daily clinical and administrative operations to ensure smooth day‑to‑day operations in the physician practice. This includes medical/nursing support to provider staff in the ambulatory setting, preparing the patient and seeing them through the entirety of their visit, as well as responsibilities of the Patient Service.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties
  • Room patients and prepare them for the provider visit.
  • Takes vital signs as necessary, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, pulse‑oximetry, weight, height, and respiratory rate, and enters data accurately into the EMR.
  • Records patient history, chief complaint, pharmacy information, prescription list, and related details into the EMR for physical exams.
  • Obtains required consents and completes required forms for specific visit types.
  • Performs office testing as needed and conducts controls on certain in‑office tests.
  • Performs EKGs as ordered.
  • Chaperones providers as required.
  • Administers vaccines and medications as ordered by the provider, following BMC policies.
  • Stocks rooms and monitors expiration of supplies in exam rooms.
  • Assists with incoming calls by answering, triaging, and routing telephone calls appropriately.
  • Registers patients in the EMR, verifies demographics, obtains accurate health insurance information, and conducts eligibility checks.
  • Schedules patients’ appointments and appropriate testing as directed.
  • Follows scheduling rules and directly schedules patient visits in other practices.
  • Performs pre‑visit planning daily for all upcoming scheduled appointments.
  • Performs outreach to select patient groups as directed for patient care and quality, scheduling specialty appointments and testing as required.
  • Informs the manager of all clinical or administrative supply needs or assists with ordering.
  • Obtains prior authorizations and/or insurance referrals as per practice need.
  • Performs phlebotomy, including venipuncture and collection of blood specimens for laboratory processing in the outpatient clinic, adhering to proper patient identification and safety protocols.
  • Conducts point‑of‑care testing as required and processes laboratory specimens in accordance with guidelines.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes clinical instruments and equipment per infection control standards and maintains documentation for sterilization logs.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent – no prior experience required.
  • Education from an approved medical assistant program.
  • One to three years of medical assistant experience.
  • Phlebotomy experience.
Certifications, Licenses & Registrations
  • Required: None.
  • Preferred: Certified Medical Assistant certification and phlebotomy certification.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
Compensation Range

$17.79 – $25.00 per hour. This range reflects base pay based on education, experience, skills, and certifications, and may be supplemented by benefits such as medical, dental, vision, and pharmacy coverage, discretionary annual bonuses, merit increases, Flexible Spending Accounts, 403(b) savings matches, paid time off, career advancement opportunities, and other resources to support employee and family well‑being.
