Job Overview: A busy, high-volume surgical subspecialty practice in the Washington, DC area is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Medical Assistant / Surgical Assistant. This full-time, paid position offers hands-on clinical experience in a dynamic and fast-paced outpatient surgical setting. We welcome applications from recent graduates and students in a gap year who are pursuing careers in medicine or physician assistant studies.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare examination and procedure rooms; ensure all instruments and supplies are ready
- Interview patients to obtain medical history and reason for visit
- Assist the physician with examinations, minor procedures, and in-office surgeries
- Scribe and document clinical notes in our electronic medical record (ModMed)
- Ensure patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations
- Respond to patient inquiries via phone and coordinate follow-up care
- Maintain clean, organized, and well-stocked clinical spaces
- Sterilize instruments and follow infection control protocols
- Perform basic equipment maintenance and report issues for repair
- Relay physician instructions and provide post-operative care education to patients
- Uphold professional appearance and demeanor at all times
- Additional administrative and clinical support as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent 4-year college degree required)
- Strong interest in medicine, surgery, or healthcare delivery
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to multi-task and thrive in a collaborative team environment
- High attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proficient with medical terminology and clinical documentation
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR); ModMed experience a plus
- Commitment to maintaining a professional, patient-focused atmosphere

Preferred Candidate Profile

This role is ideal for individuals seeking clinical exposure and mentorship before applying to medical or PA programs. Previous gap year assistants have successfully matriculated at top-tier medical schools after 12–18 months in this position.
