MedStar Health is looking for a Medical Assistant to join our team at MedStar Health Urgent Care! The ideal candidate will be a certified Medical Assistant with excellent customer service and patient interaction skills. Our Urgent Cares are open 7 days a week from 8AM to 8PM. The schedule involves 3 12-hour shifts with rotating weekends, varying month to month.
The Medical Assistant will perform clinical and administrative duties under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Responsibilities include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, vital signs measurement and documentation, assisting with patient exams, and providing telephone and clerical support.
This position may involve floating to other sites within the system.

Primary Duties:
- Assist providers with office procedures, patient preparation, examinations, and education.
- Support the clinical care team to ensure efficient patient flow and manage patient volume.
- Review and prepare for scheduled patient visits, screen patients for preventative care, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns, and fall risks.
- Conduct surveillance for transitions of care, urgent/emergent needs, and follow-up tasks.
- Perform motivational interviewing, including patient screening and coaching on disease management and community outreach.
- Identify behavioral health needs and notify providers accordingly.
- Report problems concerning patients, families, and staff.
- Participate in performance improvement initiatives to enhance care quality and safety.
- Maintain compliance through training, audits, and environmental responsibilities.
- Engage in population management activities, including patient self-management support and health goal setting.
- Perform selected patient and laboratory testing, including Point of Care Testing, TB skin testing, EKGs, pulmonary function tests, vision and hearing tests.
- Remove sutures/staples, document activities in EMR, and perform follow-up procedures.
- Assist with patient discharge, infection prevention, and environmental responsibilities.
- Manage medical supplies and inventory, and provide telephone screening services.
- May insert IV catheters, urinary catheters, and administer oral drugs and injections as authorized.
- Utilize EMR for medication refills, test requisitions, and insurance pre-authorizations.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants within 1 year or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists within 1 year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Experience in an ambulatory care medical office or similar setting.
- Externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting is strongly preferred.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program is preferred.
- Externship at MedStar Health may substitute for experience.
- For Cardiology offices: 6 months of ambulatory care experience, or a related degree, or completion of a cardiac technician course is preferred.
The hiring range for this position is $19.17 - $33.08 per hour.
