Job summary

The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inc. is seeking an experienced Media Systems Engineer to design, maintain, and program classroom media system technology. You will support installations from design to commissioning and help ensure robust, reliable technology in teaching and learning spaces.

Responsibilities cover AV-over-IP, DSP programming, networking, and system integration. A strong emphasis on collaboration with vendors, staff, and contractors helps advance campus-wide AV standards.

Qualifications

  • Experience with the mechanical process of installing equipment, including mounting, hanging, and assembling systems.

  • Experience managing audiovisual installation projects from design to commissioning.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advance Crestron Programming Certification.
  • QSC Level 2 Q-SYS Training completed and certified.
  • AutoCad, Star Draw, or similar professional media systems drafting system experience AV over IP, Multicast, or Dante Certification.
  • AVIXA CTS Certification.
  • Experience working with various trades for construction requirements.
  • Experience overseeing contractor installations of AV systems.
Brief Description of Duties:

The Media Systems Engineer will be an Audio/Visual professional who will help design, maintain, and program classroom media system technology. The incumbent will assist in installing projects that help grow the unit's goals of supporting robust, reliable technology in teaching and learning spaces, and other spaces as required. This position will aid in the design and support of increasingly complex back ends, including networking, programming, AV over IP, and digital audio, to meet information technology standards for accessibility, secure networking principles, and equipment reporting. They will also proliferate the recommendations of campus-wide standards and alignment in design, deployment, maintenance, and refresh across an increasing pool of classrooms, and other media-equipped spaces to industry standards. The Media Systems Engineer must have the ability to communicate with others effectively and help build and maintain strong working relationships.

Duties:
Installation, systems commissioning, and debugging:
  • Install and terminate cabling, build and wire AV racks, configure DSPs, AV-over-IP networks, and control systems, while verifying network readiness and adherence to organizational standards.
  • Lead commissioning activities, including system calibration, DSP tuning, end-to-end testing, documentation, and resolution of deficiencies. Ensure all newly deployed AV systems are fully operational and optimized for user needs. Help create workflows to enable projects to achieve 100% compliance across all ecosystems.
  • Work with team members to install and terminate cabling (HDMI, SDI, CAT6/7, fiber).
  • Work with team members to build and wire AV racks to industry standards.
  • Configure DSPs (Q-SYS, Biamp, BSS), Dante routing, multicast, VLANs, QoS, and programming.
  • Validate network readiness for AV systems, including switch configuration, port provisioning, and bandwidth planning.
  • Ensure provisioning and inventory completion to organizational definitions of industry standards
  • Commission new AV systems, including calibration, tuning, DSP programming, and control system validation.
  • Perform end-to-end testing of AV signal paths, networked audio/video, and room automation. Document commissioning results and resolve deficiencies.
Maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgrading:
  • Maintain the reliability, performance, and lifecycle of enterprise AV systems by responding to incidents, troubleshooting complex technical issues, and performing preventative maintenance activities as assigned.
  • Ensure system stability through firmware management, configuration control, AV network monitoring, and collaboration with network teams, while also being inclusive in AV upgrade initiatives, standardizing room designs and deployment practices and driving long-term technology modernization strategies that support organizational growth and scalability.
  • Respond to AV incidents and resolve issues per SLAs.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all AV spaces.
  • Maintain firmware, patches, and configuration backups. Monitor AV network health and performance. Work with network teams to ensure AV traffic stability.
  • Debug complex AV systems including DSP logic, control system scripts, AV-over-IP routing, and network-related issues.
  • Design and lead scalable AV upgrade initiatives across multiple rooms or sites.
  • Standardize AV room templates, hardware packages, and deployment processes.
  • Drive lifecycle planning and modernization efforts aligned with organizational growth.
Systems Design, Programming & Architecture:
  • Design and program scalable, reliable, and standards-based audiovisual systems. Develops comprehensive system architectures that incorporate displays, audio systems, microphones, DSPs, control processors, and AV-over-IP technologies.
  • Produce detailed design documentation, including signal flow diagrams, rack elevations, and equipment lists. Integrate AV networking requirements
  • Develop AV system designs including displays, audio systems, microphones, DSPs, control processors, and AV-over-IP solutions.
  • Produce signal flow diagrams, rack elevations, and equipment lists.
  • Integrate AV networking requirements into system architecture, including multicast, VLAN segmentation, Dante routing, and QoS considerations.
  • Lead AV-network best practices and standards across switches, endpoints, and control systems.
  • Program systems to standard as required.
External Engagement & Supervision:
  • Participate in meetings and serve as technical liaison with vendors, integrators, and external partners.
  • Lead or support small-scale AV projects, upgrades, and room refreshes.
  • Provide technical oversight during vendor installations and commissioning.
  • Review detailed bill of materials, systems drawings, labor estimates, and design narratives to use by in-house installation teams or contractors.
  • Be responsible for the training of student assistants supporting media systems maintenance.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned, as appropriate to rank and department mission.
Special Notes:

Primary hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday. The position requires lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds, aided and unaided by dollies and carts, on a continuous and repetitive basis; the ability to work with hand and power tools; and the ability to work at heights greater than 30 feet.

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
