Job description

SUMMARY

SUMMARY: With Supervision, is responsible for planning and implementing Media Center programs and services for students and staff.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Requisitions all Media Center acquisitions including books, periodicals, audiovisual supplies, and equipment. 20%
  • Proposes Media center budget with expenditure categories for books, periodicals, audiovisuals, equipment, supplies, etc. 15%
  • Maintains up to date inventory the School’s media and technology holdings. 15%
  • Maintains and submits accounting records and reports to MSDE listing all media Acquisitions. 10%
  • Manages access to APH, computerized central catalog and conducts searches for Braille, large print, and taped textbooks requested by instructional staff. 15%
  • Registers students with The Maryland Library for the Blind and Print Disabled; arranges for students to receive home materials and equipment.
  • Leads classroom activities for all students in the area of Library and Media
  • Maintains library of professional materials and assessments for staff use.

Marginal Functions:

  • Performs clerical work as necessary.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
CONDITIONS

Equipment Used: Single line telephone, laminating machine, thermofax machine, photocopier, electronic magnifier, Braillewriter, and computer.

Performance Standard: Must perform assigned tasks accurately and in a timely manner 100% of the time.

Work Environment: Standard office and classroom conditions with overhead fluorescent lighting, 70-80 degree air temperature, single window ventilation.

Work Schedule: 35 daytime hours per week, Monday through Friday with daily half-hour unpaid lunch; flextime hours occasionally required. This position follows a ten-month schedule.

QULAFICATIONS

Education and Certification:

  • Minimum education accepted is a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Must hold Library Media Specialist certificate/license.

Knowledge, skills, and general abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of library systems and books and media selection procedures.
  • General knowledge of educational and special education theory, practices and policies, theory and practices of educating students who are visually impaired and may also have multiple disabilities.
  • Basic knowledge of audio/visual systems and equipment, and grant writing.
  • Good leadership ability.

After six months in this position, the employee is required to have:

  • Basic knowledge of Braille
  • General knowledge of First Aide and CPR.
  • General knowledge of employee handbook.
Mental Abilities
  • Ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to read professional journals, student records, evaluative reports.
  • Ability to write reports, summaries, instructions, and correspondence using proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly with appropriate peers.
  • Ability to compute ratios, rate and percent; to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Physical Abilities
  • Ability to sit for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to grasp papers, finger keyboard, send and receive person to person written messages.
  • Ability to travel from site-to-site around campus on a frequent basis and off-campus on an infrequent basis.
  • Ability to carry library materials and equipment weighing up to 30 lbs. independently, push or pull items weighing in excess of 50 lbs., climb and descend stairs, stoop, reach, and stand.
Temperament Requirements
  • Ability to deal frequently with people, respond to high volume of requests and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to make judgments and decisions concerning focused area of responsibility.
  • Ability to express ideas and personal responses, and function in a confidential manner.
  • Ability to perform a variety of duties with frequent changes of tasks.
PROBLEM SOLVIING ABILITY
  • Has the latitude to cope with most Media center problems.
  • Confers with supervisor on all non-routine concerns.
