Purpose: Provide leadership under the direction of Library Media Services to ensure all students are effective users of ideas and information. Supervise and manage the school library/media center and programs. Offer services and resources that help students develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems (21st-century skills). Engage learners through print and digital resources to access, create, and share content, collaborating as global citizens. Serve as a teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to fully integrate the library/media center into instructional programs. Must have proficiency in engaging learners with various instructional strategies.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Use TEKs/SEs and library curriculum products, including Library Scope and Sequence, to provide instruction and guidance to students in resource location and research techniques.
  2. Develop strategic plans to meet the standards and guidelines for Texas School Library Programs.
  3. Participate as an educational leader and partner in curriculum development at campus and district levels, consulting with teachers on material use and scheduling.
  4. Model and promote collaborative planning, cooperative teaching, and direct instruction based on learners’ needs and curriculum standards.
  5. Promote ethical use of resources and instruct students in locating, gathering, and evaluating information responsibly.
  6. Provide ongoing learning opportunities for students and staff, fostering active participation and engagement, especially in technology and information literacy.
  7. Supervise Media Assistant(s) and student aides, managing multiple tasks and interruptions effectively.
  8. Offer instructional access to resources through flexible scheduling, creating a conducive learning environment.
  9. Maintain a balanced, current, and relevant collection of print and digital resources, adhering to collection development policies.
  10. Implement library management strategies including budgeting, purchasing, scheduling, and overseeing facilities and resources.
  11. Encourage high circulation and facilitate access beyond the campus via inter-library loan.
  12. Support academic rigor by teaching research skills, encouraging creativity, and promoting lifelong learning.
  13. Collaborate with the community and libraries to achieve shared goals benefiting students.
  14. Enforce discipline according to policies and support students’ right to access diverse materials.
  15. Engage positively with students to promote a love of reading and a safe, age-appropriate environment.
  16. Stay informed about student and staff information culture and incorporate this into programs.
  17. Communicate effectively through various channels and comply with legal and policy requirements.
  18. Evaluate and improve the library/media center program regularly based on data and feedback.
  19. Engage in professional growth and participate in relevant associations and publications.
  20. Perform administrative tasks to keep the library orderly and functional.
  21. Perform other duties related to the library program as assigned.
  22. Ensure compliance with federal reporting requirements for federally funded positions.
  23. Maintain regular and punctual attendance at the worksite.
  24. Work Environment: The environment is usually moderate noise. Travel within the district is required. Remote work is not an option as regular attendance at the worksite is essential.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution with valid Texas Library certification; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum two years as a qualified teacher; bilingual skills are a plus.
  • Knowledge of library and information science.
  • Ability to instruct and manage students in diverse environments.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing conditions.
  • Willingness to stay current with professional developments.

Salary is based on the Board-approved RELATED INSTRUCTIONAL salary schedule.
