Primary Purpose: Perform original and copy cataloging based on current standards, database maintenance, authority control, and provides training and inventory support for campus media centers. This position also resolves cataloging problems and aids in the maintenance of the online catalog. As part of the Destiny Support Team, the cataloguer provides advice, offers demonstrations, and provides information on best practices and up-to-date policies in cataloging.
Qualifications/Skills: Education/Certification:
- Master’s degree from an accredited school library college or university, preferred. Bachelors/Master’s degree in library science required.
- Valid Texas Teacher Certificate or Teaching Certification from out of state appropriate for position.
- Previous experience as a librarian/library media specialist, or experience supporting campus library media centers preferred
- Certification must meet requirements for becoming and remaining qualified for this position in a manner required by Federal and/or State law.
Special Knowledge/Skills:- Good working knowledge of the principles and procedures of professional library work including methods, practices, and techniques of library cataloging and classification. Excellent knowledge of digital cataloging.
- Good knowledge of professional library theories, issues, and trends. Excellent knowledge of standard bibliographic sources, bibliographic form and verification tools.
- Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum training design, teaching and instruction, and the measurement of training effects.
- Good oral and written communications skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the district and within the community.
- Ability to be timely in responding to a request.
- Ability to be flexible, to use time wisely and to perform duties in a professional manner.
- Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude towards co-workers, campus media centers and job duties.
- Ability to effectively use a computer.
- Ability to train, coach, and support campus media center assistants as necessary
Major Duties and
Responsibilities: Catalog Management:- Perform original (including complex) and copy cataloging of all formats of media center materials to facilitate their identification, access and use.
- Interpret and apply Library of Congress subject headings, the Dewey Decimal System, the AACR2, RDA, and the Online Computer Library center (OCLC) manuals in cataloging and classifying library materials.
- Maintain authority records and perform needed authority work in the database.
- Ensure accurate entry and maintenance of records related to media center materials in alignment with board policies EFB Local and EFB Regulation.
- Consult with campus media center assistants and lead media center assistants in order to resolve cataloging and database problems, report trends in bibliographic services, answer questions, transmit information, and discuss options for handling library materials.
- Provide inventory support.
- Provide Destiny support to all users.
- Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with internal staff and staff from area public libraries.
- Provide accurate and timely information in a language and format that is easily understood by members and colleagues.
- Perform database maintenance for bibliographic and authority records. Load MARC record files for member libraries and communicates necessary changes.
- Maintain the integrity of the integrated library system through authority file control.
- Utilize secondary cataloging editing software to enhance MARC records for increased ease of accessibility of media center materials.

Physical Demands:- Prolonged use of the computer.
- Some evening and weekend work will be required, with occasional overnight travel.
- Primarily sedentary work, but also requires standing, walking, stooping or crouching, kneeling, crawling, reaching, pushing, grasping, lifting, feeling, hearing, and talking.
- Requires the ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Must be able to concentrate on detailed information over an extended period of time.
