STATEMENT OF JOB:
The Medication Aide (West Virginia: AMAP -- Approved Medication Assistant Personnel) provides quality care and assistance with activities of daily living for residents of the community. They assist with the administration of prescribed medications within the established scope of practice. The Medication Aide encourages residents to function at their highest level of independence and participate in community activities, conducting activities and providing meaningful experiences. They are responsible for ensuring a pleasurable dining experience and representing the community positively at all times.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assisting with the administration of prescribed medications within the scope of practice.
- Maintaining knowledge of all relevant policies and procedures.
- Assisting residents with activities of daily living.
- Reporting incidents, care concerns, or issues involving residents to appropriate personnel (e.g., HCC, RN/LPN, ED).
- Performing housekeeping duties such as making beds and cleaning resident areas as directed.
- Responding promptly to resident calls for assistance or emergencies.
- Planning and conducting activity programs for residents.
- Following confidentiality policies regarding resident information.
- Assisting residents to and from dining and activities, ensuring attendance.
- Monitoring residents' health status and reporting concerns.
- Communicating verbally and in writing about resident status, appointments, admissions, and transfers.
- Supporting new residents during move-in with emotional support.
- Attending medication training sessions.
- Completing medication cart audits and maintaining the medication cart.
- Passing medication administration observations.
- Documenting medication needs and administration in the EMAR/MAR and Daily Log.
- Reordering medications, communicating with pharmacies and families as needed, and documenting all actions.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
For West Virginia AMAP: Assists with medication administration under the supervision of an RN, with all new medications or changes reviewed by the RN prior to administration.

Requirements for North Carolina:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Current Medication Aide Certification in good standing
- Recent experience as a medication aide in an adult care home
- Completion of clinical skills validation prior to medication administration
- 6 hours of annual in-service training, including safe practices, glucose monitoring, and infection control
- Passes of 2 medication observations and cart audits annually
- Effective communication skills
- Organizational skills and ability to follow instructions
- Politeness and consideration for residents and staff
- Physical ability to walk, stand, lift, and transfer residents safely
- Uniform and name badge during work hours
- CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain within 60 days
- Professional representation of the community
- Attendance at in-services and staff meetings
- Calmness and competence during emergencies
- Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
Requirements for Pennsylvania:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Completion of a Department-approved medication administration course with competency testing within the past 2 years, including specific medications as authorized
- Passes of 2 medication observations and cart audits annually
Requirements for West Virginia:
- Current AMAP certification
- Passes of medication observations and cart audits annually

- Participation in retraining every two years
- Professional conduct and flexibility in scheduling
