Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Sunnyvale is seeking a Med Lab Scientist responsible for processing laboratory specimens and reporting results across all areas of the clinical laboratory. This role involves maintaining laboratory records, following policies and procedures, and ensuring quality control. The position serves a diverse age range including neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

Typical responsibilities include :

  • Functioning in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology / immunology, and urinalysis.
  • Performing moderate and high-complexity testing.
  • Adjusting methods and procedures for different age groups.
  • Performing quality control procedures and instrument checks.
  • Understanding expected lab values for all age groups.
  • Notifying healthcare providers of critical lab values.
  • Maintaining accurate laboratory records for statistics and billing.
  • Ensuring documentation standards and policies are met.
  • Interacting professionally with laboratory and clinical staff.
  • Collaborating with other departments to support patient care and quality improvement.
  • Adhering to safety standards and managing laboratory equipment properly.
  • Staying informed about new testing methods and technologies.
  • Maintaining compliance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrating flexibility, organization, and composure under stress.
  • Valuing teamwork consistently.

Qualifications and success factors include :

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an approved institution or graduation from an accredited medical technology program, or military training as defined by 42 CFR 493.1489. Qualified prior to 2/28/92 via HHS exam also acceptable.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a medical technologist in an acute care setting, or 1 year plus a Master’s degree.
  • Certification from an approved agency (ASCP, NCA, AMT, CSMLS) within 12 months of hire; non-US trained personnel must complete an equivalency evaluation within 30 days.
  • State licensure as required.
  • Effective communication skills in English; additional languages preferred.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, and analyzers.

Additional responsibilities include assisting with equipment validation, employee training, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance activities.

Education :

Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, as specified above.

Experience :

Required: 2 years in an acute care laboratory setting or 1 year with a Master’s degree.

Certifications :

Required: Certification from an approved agency within 12 months of hire; equivalency evaluation for non-US trained personnel within 30 days; state licensure as applicable.
