Launch your career with Busch Vacuum Solutions through our Registered Mechatronics Designer Apprenticeship Program based in Virginia Beach, VA.
This full-time, paid apprenticeship combines hands-on technical experience with classroom instruction—all fully funded by Busch — as you build the foundation for a successful career in mechanical and electrical system design. Aligned with the Virginia Registered Apprenticeship Program and the U.S. Department of Labor under the Mechanical Engineering Technologist pathway, the program is structured to last approximately 2 to 2.5 years.
As a Busch Mechatronics Designer Apprentice, you’ll work closely with systems engineers and production teams to support the design of vacuum systems, learn mechanical and electrical drafting using SolidWorks and SolidWorks Electrical, and develop PLC/HMI programming skills. You’ll gain real-world experience while contributing to exciting, impactful projects.
What You’ll Do
- Learn and support the mechanical and electrical design of vacuum systems using SolidWorks and SolidWorks Electrical
- Develop knowledge in PLC and HMI programming fundamentals
- Assist in creating, interpreting, and applying engineering drawings, standards, and technical documentation
- Participate in departmental projects, both independently and collaboratively
- Support Lean manufacturing principles and maintain a clean, efficient workspace in line with 5S standards
- Follow safety regulations and use appropriate PPE at all times
- Attend and participate in required off-site classroom instruction as part of your workweek and maintain grades above a ‘C’ average

Eligibility Requirements
Skills & Abilities:
Education: High School Diploma or GED required- Must place into college-level Algebra or higher
- Must enroll at a state-accredited institution under the Mechanical Engineering Technologist curriculum
Experience:- Experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment preferred
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications required
Computer Skills:- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe PDF required)
- Experience with 2D/3D design software preferred
- Other Requirements: Valid driver’s license; willingness to travel domestically for training
Personal Qualities
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Eagerness to learn and apply engineering concepts
- Professionalism, accountability, and good communication
- Must be able to pass a 10-panel drug screen and a 7-year criminal background check
- Felonies may disqualify candidates, while misdemeanors will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis
- Ability to wear and use required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Physical Requirements
- Frequent sitting, standing, and manual dexterity
- Occasional bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting (up to 50 lbs)
- Ability to work in a climate-controlled office and production environment with moderate noise and dust
- Must be able to wear PPE including safety glasses (non-metallic frames), EH-rated safety footwear, hand protection, and hearing protection
