Job summary

Jobtailor in Dearborn, MI seeks an experienced Senior Systems Engineer to lead a Core Systems Engineers team, owning logical requirements for advanced mechatronic vehicle features. You will drive stakeholder elicitation, system analysis, and DFMEA cross-validation to ensure sign-off quality across programs.

You will mentor engineers, coordinate prototype tests, and ensure ISO 26262/ASPICE compliance while interfacing with management, suppliers, and customers to align risks and milestones.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years in systems engineering or mechatronic systems engineering within automotive or related industry.
  • 2+ years leading, supervising, or mentoring engineers, in a formal or technical lead role.
  • Experience generating and owning logical/system requirements.
  • Familiarity with DFMEA and cross-validation of functional safety findings.
  • Experience with Jama and systems modeling tools (SysML/Cameo).

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of Core Systems Engineers.
  • Define, develop, validate, and sign off logical requirements for new mechatronic vehicle features.
  • Oversee feature development from elicitation through concept of operations to sign-off.
  • Maintain primary stakeholder involvement during hardware/software cascade and simulation activities.
  • Lead DFMEA cross-validation checkpoints for functional safety.
  • Own system/subsystem sign-off decisions.
  • Oversee prototype development and test plans.
  • Review test results and feed findings into requirements or design.
  • Plan resources, staffing, and workload across programs.
  • Mentor and develop team members and coaches.
  • Liaise with program management, customer experience, vehicle architecture, Mechatronics, quality, and suppliers.
  • Represent the team at gateway reviews and sign-off boards.
  • Communicate requirements status, risk, and mitigation plans.

Job description

  • Lead and develop a team of Core Systems Engineers
  • Define, develop, validate, and sign off logical requirements for new and modified mechatronic vehicle features
  • Oversee feature development from stakeholder and use-case elicitation through Concept of Operations, system definition, system analysis, DFMEA development, and logical requirements handoff
  • Maintain primary stakeholder involvement during hardware/software cascade and simulation activities
  • Lead functional safety-to-DFMEA cross-validation checkpoints
  • Own system/subsystem sign-off decisions
  • Lead physical system realization through mockups, fixtures, and 3D-printed or rapid prototypes
  • Oversee development and execution of prototype test plans
  • Review test results and root-cause analyses and feed findings into requirements or design
  • Plan resources, staffing, team capacity, and workload distribution across programs
  • Conduct performance management, coaching, mentoring, and career development
  • Act as primary liaison with program management, customer experience, vehicle architecture, Mechatronics, quality, and suppliers
  • Represent the team at program gateway reviews, sign-off boards, and DFMEA workshops
  • Communicate requirements status, sign-off status, technical risks, and mitigation plans
  • Track and resolve open issues, non-conformances, engineering waivers, and cross-functional conflicts
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 26262, IATF 16949, ASPICE, SAE, and related standards
  • Champion continuous improvement of feature definition, sign-off, and prototyping processes
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or Automotive Engineering (or related field)
  • 10+ years of experience in systems engineering, requirements development, or mechatronic systems engineering within automotive or a related industry, including experience generating and owning logical/system requirements
  • 2+ years of experience leading, supervising, or mentoring engineers, either in a formal management role or as a technical lead
  • Strong understanding of the systems engineering lifecycle: stakeholder/use-case elicitation, Concept of Operations, system definition, system analysis, and requirements validation
  • Experience with DFMEA and cross-validation of functional safety findings against design failure modes
  • Familiarity with requirements management tools such as Jama
  • Systems/requirements traceability practices
  • Agile/JIRA-based program tracking
  • Working knowledge of control system modeling using MATLAB/Simulink
  • Knowledge of hardware/software cascade concepts
  • Experience overseeing physical prototype development, including mockups, fixtures, and 3D printing/rapid prototyping
  • Experience with test plan development and execution
  • People-leadership skills including coaching, performance management, workload planning, and conflict resolution
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to present requirements, risk, and sign-off recommendations to senior program leadership and review boards
  • Preferred: Experience with ISO 26262 and ASPICE processes
  • Preferred: Experience with SysML/Cameo or other formal systems modeling tools
  • Preferred: Knowledge of CAN, LIN, Ethernet, and FlexRay
  • Preferred: Familiarity with statistical tolerance analysis, DFMEA/PFMEA, and reliability/durability testing methods
  • Preferred: Prior feature ownership, release engineering, or sign-off authority experience within an OEM or Tier 1 mechatronics environment
  • Preferred: Experience with HIL/SIL test environments and dSPACE, CANoe/CANalyzer, or LabVIEW
