Job summary

Actalent in Minnetonka, MN is seeking a Mechanical Test Engineer to support R&D for capital equipment, instruments, and medical-device subsystems. You will work with engineers to design and refine prototypes, develop fixtures and test methods, and document results.

Job Title: Mechanical Test Engineer

Job Description

The Mechanical Test Engineer Development supports research and development activities for capital equipment, instruments, disposables, and related medical-device subsystems. In this hands‑on role, you collaborate closely with engineers to create and refine prototypes, develop test fixtures and test methods, execute engineering tests, maintain accurate design documentation, and provide practical feedback on manufacturability, fit, function, tolerancing, and overall design robustness.

Responsibilities
  • Support R&D activities for capital equipment, instruments, disposables, and related medical-device subsystems by contributing mechanical test expertise.
  • Collaborate with engineers to design, build, and refine prototypes that meet functional and performance requirements.
  • Develop and implement mechanical test fixtures, test equipment setups, and test methods to validate product designs and subsystems.
  • Plan, execute, and document complex engineering tests, ensuring that test development and execution follow defined procedures and quality standards.
  • Create and maintain clear, accurate, and complete design and test documentation, including test plans, protocols, reports, and related records.
  • Provide practical feedback on manufacturability, including considerations for mechanical processes, machining, and manufacturing engineering requirements.
  • Evaluate and report on fit, function, tolerancing, and design robustness to help improve product reliability and performance.
  • Support product development activities by participating in test planning, test execution, and data analysis for mechanical systems and components.
  • Work with mechanical test equipment and flow‑related test setups to assess performance and verify compliance with design specifications.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of test development practices, documentation standards, and engineering support processes.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and product development teams to ensure alignment between design intent and test outcomes.
Essential Skills
  • Demonstrated experience with complex test development and execution for mechanical systems and products.
  • Strong documentation practices, with the ability to create, organize, and maintain detailed engineering and test records.
  • Hands‑on experience with mechanical test equipment and test setups used to evaluate mechanical performance and flow characteristics.
  • Experience in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or related engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to develop and execute test plans, including defining test methods, setting up equipment, and recording and interpreting results.
  • Associate degree, technical diploma, or certificate in mechanical engineering technology, manufacturing engineering technology, electromechanical technology, machining, or a related technical discipline; equivalent practical experience may be considered.
  • Approximately 3+ years of relevant experience as an engineering technician, mechanical technician, prototype technician, or in an equivalent hands‑on technical role (preferred).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working with test equipment and test development in a product development or engineering support environment.
  • Familiarity with mechanical processes, manufacturing workflows, and product development life cycles.
  • Experience in medical devices or another regulated industry with exposure to GMP, ISO, FDA, or comparable quality‑system requirements (preferred).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and cross‑functional teams in support of test engineering and product development activities.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to testing, documentation, and problem‑solving.
  • Comfort working with prototypes, disposables, and mechanical subsystems in a development setting.
Work Environment

This role is based in a facility located in Minnetonka, Minnesota that supports business operations and manufacturing alignment for advanced medical products and systems. You work in a development and manufacturing environment that focuses on capital equipment, instruments, disposables, and related medical‑device subsystems. The setting combines engineering labs and production areas, where you use mechanical test equipment, fixtures, and tools to support research, development, and testing activities. You collaborate closely with engineering and manufacturing teams in a regulated environment that follows established quality‑system and operational procedures.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Hopkins, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $60.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job‑related factors.
