Job summary

nLIGHT-DEFENSE Systems, Inc. in Longmont, CO is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technician to support assembly, integration, and test of advanced laser and electro‑optical systems.

You will work onsite in a clean room environment with a focus on quality and safety. The role requires at least 3 years’ experience with mechanical systems, strong CAD skills (SolidWorks preferred), and proficiency with hand and power tools.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years professional experience working with mechanical systems.
  • HS Diploma or GED required; Bachelor/Associate Degree or Technical Certification is a plus.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools and work in a clean room environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage schedule and priorities with guidance to meet objectives.
  • CAD navigation including light design and part/assembly drawing generation.
  • Fixture design and assembly.
  • Prepare assembly documentation including procedures and status.
  • Coordinate build space allocation and material handling.
  • Install and integrate mechanical and electro‑mechanical components.
  • Operate tools to complete assemblies per prints and BOMs.
  • Support thermal management system assembly and test.
  • Assist with facility support tasks as needed.

Compensation: $30-$44/hour depending on experience.

Summary:

The Mechanical Engineering Technician will provide assembly, integration, and test in support of the development of cutting‑edge laser and electro‑optical systems.

Responsibilities:
  • Effectively manage schedule and priorities with moderate daily direction to meet schedule objectives.
  • CAD navigation including light design and part/assembly drawing generation
  • Fixture design and assembly
  • Assembly documentation including procedures and status.
  • Coordination of build space allocation
  • Material handling to include receipt and inspection of components.
  • Installation and integration of mechanical and electro‑mechanical components (combination of COTS & custom mechanics).
  • Operate hand and power tools to complete mechanical assemblies specified by prints, schematics, and BOMS.
  • Thermal management systems assembly and test.
  • Additional duties related to facility support (clean rooms, chillers).

  • Ability to work in a dynamic and at times stressful environment and maintain composure and good working relationships under stress. Requirements change frequently and rapid-turn solutions must be developed frequently.
  • Competence in maintaining cleanliness standards and operation in a clean room environment.
  • Comfortable working with wide range of basic shop equipment including the use of hand and power tools to complete mechanical assemblies specified by prints, schematics, and BOMS.
  • Positive attitude, strong mechanical aptitude, problem solving and troubleshooting skills and a willingness to develop creative solutions to time‑sensitive problems.
  • Familiarity with safe operation of mechanical systems; operate with a safety‑first mindset.
  • CAD proficiency, SolidWorks preferred.
  • Expertise and competence in working with high power laser systems.
  • Electrical cables and components assembly and test.
