Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Mechanical Systems, aids in the installation, service and maintenance of mechanical systems equipment. Assists in the repairs of electrical and electromechanical equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of critical facility infrastructure. Logs all work-related activities using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Responds to service calls, alarms, and emergency situations as required while maintaining compliance with safety, regulatory, and departmental standards. Works collaboratively with staff, contractors, and other departments to support uninterrupted facility operations and a high level of customer service.

This is NOT an Apprenticeship position.

General
  • Assist the HVAC or Mechanic Leadsperson as directed by the Department Manager, based on departmental operational needs for the upkeep of mechanical systems equipment and associated areas
  • Follows assigned daily work schedules and priorities as directed. Day-shift employees shall not deviate from assigned work without Leadman approval. Employees on off-shifts shall document any necessary assignment changes and the reason for the change in the logbook.
  • Assist other Plant Engineering shops as directed.
  • Reports to work in the required uniform and ID badge while presenting a professional appearance at the start of each shift in accordance with YNHH & departmental uniform policies.
  • Carries a flashlight, radio and “tablet” with them at all times.
  • Completes all assigned work each day and communicates any obstacles, delays, or unresolved issues to the Leadman prior to the end of the shift.
  • Maintains assigned work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition. Reports any project-related materials, equipment storage, or unauthorized use of mechanical spaces by others to the Leadman immediately. Keeps shop carts, workbenches, and work areas clean, and disposes of defective or unusable parts appropriately.
  • Identifies and reports unsafe conditions promptly and consistently uses required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices to prevent workplace injuries and accidents.
  • Attends required department meetings, safety briefings, and training sessions to maintain and improve job knowledge, skills, and regulatory compliance.
  • Works collaboratively with team members and other departments to help investigate and resolve fire alarm activations, flooding incidents, elevator issues and other emergencies or calls for service as requested.
  • Reports all defective or malfunctioning equipment through the proper channels.
  • Communicates significant operational issues, emergencies, equipment failures, safety concerns, or other important matters to the Leadman or on-call supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Conducts a thorough shift turnover that includes equipment status updates, outstanding work orders, ongoing issues, items requiring follow-up, and any developing conditions that may affect operations or patient care.
  • Makes productive use of unscheduled time when call volume is low by addressing non-scheduled repairs, completing preventive maintenance tasks, performing housekeeping activities, or assisting with other departmental priorities.
  • Communicates with the Leadman when additional time is available to assist with service calls, projects, or other assignments. Completes assigned daily duties and equipment rounds before providing assistance on other tasks.
  • Demonstrates flexibility by adjusting work schedules when needed to help provide shift coverage, maintain operational continuity, and minimize overtime expenses. This may include but not limited to severe weather and other natural emergencies.
  • Preforms general responsibilities and activities directed by the Department Manager or Leadperson which support the operation of the department. Properly uses safety policies and procedures, like “lock out tag out” and proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Leaves equipment and the work area clean, organized, and free of debris upon completion of repairs. Ensures all tools are properly stored and that carts, workbenches, and workspaces are clean and ready for use.
  • Demonstrates technical competency by completing assigned work while seeking guidance as needed for safety, training, or specialized support.
Technical Support Functions
  • Conducts equipment rounds and documents all appropriate findings. Notifies the Leadman if any contractors have moved into a mechanical or equipment room. Any defective equipment identified during rounds must be repaired when feasible or documented in the logbook and on the shop status board for follow-up.
  • Complete all assigned Preventive Maintenance (PM) work orders by the scheduled due date and documents completion appropriately in the Computerized Maintenance System (CMS).
  • Notify the Leadman during the second or third week of the month if assigned PM work is at risk of not being completed by the monthly deadline.
  • Completes PM work efficiently and within established timeframes. Ensures all required equipment, tools, and replacement parts are available before beginning the PM task.
  • Leaves equipment and the surrounding work area clean, organized, and free of debris upon completion of work. Notifies the Leadman when an annual PM service has been completed.
  • Operates Powered Industrial Trucks and other authorized equipment only after completing the required training and certification.
  • Completes Parts Request Forms accurately and in full whenever materials or replacement parts need to be ordered
  • Checks gauge readings, vacuum’s, and changes filters as directed by the Department Manager or appropriate Leadperson.
  • Conducts air vent and coil cleanings and non licensed filter changes.
  • Drives to various supply houses for equipment and materials.
  • Transports materials to and from the appropriate shop(s) and delivers equipment to units as directed.
  • Performs routine housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment, including sweeping floors and removing trash.
  • Provides snow removal during inclement weather.
Qualifications
EDUCATION

Position requires high school graduation or GED, Some trade school preferred. Including or supplemented by technical courses in electricity, electronics, machinery or equivalent on the job training.

Experience

Trade school or formal on the job training plus three (3) to six (6) months of hands-on experience in HVAC/Refrigeration, plumbing or mechanical preferred.

Special Skills

Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems. Works independently with appropriate supervision. Keep accurate records on time and material used. Computer skills are required.
