Job Summary

Sun Tribe EPC (“Sun Tribe”) is Virginia’s premier utility-scale solar design and build firm, specializing in sub-20MW ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities. Our construction efforts are focused throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, Maryland, and neighboring states. At Sun Tribe, we build with purpose—prioritizing safety, quality, and environmental stewardship in every project we deliver.

The Mechanical Superintendent provides field leadership for mechanical construction and tracker commissioning activities on utility-scale solar construction projects, including racking and tracker installation, pile refusal remediation, quality control, testing, and commissioning readiness. Working alongside Construction Management, Project Management, Engineering, Quality, EHS, and subcontractors, this role directs mechanical subcontractor scopes, drives production and quality within assigned project areas, and resolves field issues as they arise. The Mechanical Superintendent plays a critical role in ensuring mechanical work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, manufacturer installation requirements, quality standards, and Sun Tribe’s core values.

This position reports directly to the Senior Quality & Commissioning Manager and works closely with Construction Management, Project Management, Project Engineering, EHS, clients, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders to support successful project delivery.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Oversees mechanical installation scopes, including solar racking and tracker systems, and monitors subcontractor performance to ensure alignment with safety, quality, and schedule expectations.
  • Coordinates mechanical construction workflow and sequencing, and establishes and reinforces subcontractor accountability and performance expectations.
  • Develops project production trackers and commodity curves, maintains visibility into production rates, and reports progress to Construction Management and project teams.
  • Resolves construction issues related to mechanical installation, pile refusal remediation, and commissioning activities, coordinating with Construction Managers and subcontractors to close observations and deficiencies.
  • Conducts subcontractor hold-point inspections and routine quality audits of solar racking systems, documenting compliance and corrective actions to fulfill quality plan obligations.
  • Reviews subcontractor quality plans, performs site design compliance inspections for applicable mechanical systems, and creates punch lists for mechanical subcontractors.
  • Supports and leads mechanical tracker commissioning activities, including installation verification, functional checks, troubleshooting, and coordination with subcontractors and manufacturers.
  • Supports mechanical drawing reviews and constructability assessments, providing input on sequencing, system integration, and installation strategy.
  • Participates in preconstruction planning, subcontractor onboarding, mechanical scope development, and development of site-specific mechanical (PRM) quality plans and inspection and testing requirements.
  • Supports Construction Management through coordination, communication, and short-term coverage during planned or unplanned absences.
  • Collaborates closely with Construction Management, Project Management, Engineering, Quality, EHS, subcontractors, and clients to support successful project delivery.
Basic Qualifications Required
  • Education Required: High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree in construction management or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in mechanical construction, mechanical installation, or a related field required. Additional experience is expected for roles with greater responsibility and complexity.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems and installation practices used in utility‑scale solar construction required.
  • Current, valid driver’s license and eligibility for corporate vehicle insurance coverage.
Skills & Experience Preferred
  • Experience with commissioning, troubleshooting, and startup of utility‑scale or commercial mechanical systems.
  • Understanding of mechanical installation requirements, construction drawings, project specifications, and applicable manufacturer installation procedures.
  • Proven ability to direct subcontractors and support mechanical installation and commissioning activities.
  • OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • Proficiency in Procore and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word), and familiarity with collaboration tools such as Slack.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage time, prioritize effectively, and coordinate multiple field activities and deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to coordinate across subcontractors, inspectors, engineers, and internal teams.
  • Self‑motivated and collaborative, with a commitment to continuous improvement and the ability to work effectively across cross‑functional teams.
  • Alignment with Sun Tribe’s core values: Community, Safety, Perpetual Improvement, Nature, Joy, and Respect.
  • Commitment to a culture of safety, accountability, and high‑quality project delivery, including stopping work in unsafe conditions.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Ability to travel to project sites throughout Virginia and neighboring states as needed.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required based on project demands.
  • Role requires extensive field presence, with the majority of time spent supporting active construction activities.
  • Ability to traverse active construction sites in all weather conditions, including walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, and stretching.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds as required.
  • Required to wear standard personal protective equipment (PPE) while on project sites.
