Position Purpose
The position of Mechanical & Structural Technician is responsible for maintaining all structural and mechanical facilities of PATCO. These include, but are not limited to, all PATCO buildings, bridges, subways, mechanical equipment (except HVAC and electrical equipment), and vehicles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- The individual for this position performs all functions related to maintenance, repair, and/or construction on various structures including station buildings and platforms; administration, shop, and storage buildings; electrical substation buildings; bridges and underpasses; subway tunnels, station platforms, and concourses including ancillary facilities such as roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, and non-electric utilities.
- The individual for this position maintains and repairs various grounds and right-of-way appurtenances such as signage, fencing, retaining walls, and storm drainage structures/culverts.
- The individual for this position is responsible for the maintenance of all mechanical systems and equipment including pumps, sanitary ejectors, steam heating components, restroom facilities, air compressors, subway drainage systems, and rail lubricators.
- The individual for this position maintains and repairs heavy equipment including specialized track equipment, hi-rail vehicles, rail bound and all-terrain cranes, and rubber tire loaders.
- The individual for this position performs repairs and preventive maintenance on the vehicle fleet for all PATCO Departments including all vehicles, snow removal equipment, track equipment, motorized grounds equipment, custodial equipment, power tools and other small equipment.
- The individual for this position operates automotive shop hydraulic lifts and equipment for tire mounting/balancing, front-end alignments, system diagnostics, etc.
- The individual for this position operates snow removal equipment and performs manual snow shoveling/pushing functions for all PATCO facilities as necessary.
- The individual for this position operates/pilots’ maintenance of way equipment on the mainline or yard tracks and provides watchman/flagman protection for workers within track areas.
- The individual for this position assures PATCO facilities and infrastructures are maintained in an orderly condition in accordance with PATCO standards.
- The individual for this position must be able to work a variety of schedules, including evening, night or weekend work and holidays as needed.
- The individual for this position assists in maintaining a safe and secure work environment by participating in required training, recognizing and reporting hazards and suspicious activity, and using all required personal protective equipment.
- The individual for this position performs other related duties as required and assigned.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to all provisions of the DRPA/PATCO’S Substance Abuse Testing and Control Policy including random drug testing and periodic physical testing requirements.

Education and/or Experience
Required:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED), preferably from a vocational school.
- Three (3) years experience in structural/mechanical maintenance of bridges, tunnels, buildings and related mechanical facilities and systems.
- Must be able to perform at the journey person level in one or more of the following crafts: carpenter, mason, pipefitter, plumber, welder, machinist, millwright, or auto/truck/equipment mechanic.
- Must be able to proficiently read and interpret blue prints, construction drawings, and repair manuals.
- Must be proficient in computer skills including creating of word documents, spreadsheets, and database management.
- Must be able to pass a proficiency examination that addresses all of the required knowledge
- Must be able to operate all PATCO vehicles and equipment.
- This position requires training and qualification by the Tracks and Facilities Department to operate or pilot maintenance of way equipment on the mainline or yard tracks.
- This position requires a current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with air brakes from the state of New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Delaware. Applicants who lack the appropriate CDL at the time of application, but who otherwise are deemed qualified for the position may be considered. If the selected candidate does not have the appropriate CDL at the time of selection, he or she must obtain said CDL within the orientation period. Failure to provide proof of the CDL, which is required to perform the essential duties of the job, for any reason within six (6) months from the candidate’s date of hire will result in the immediate termination of employment.

- Certification/licensed as a crane operator in New Jersey.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit (10%). The employee may be required to walk and stand (70%) and bend, lift and climb (20%). The employee must occasionally lift, hold, and carry objects up to 100 pounds. The employee must have normal day and night time vision, corrected or uncorrected, must have normal hearing, with or without device. The employee must be able to perform all position functions and must also be able to physically operate all job related equipment. Individuals in this position require a full range of physical motion and the ability to lift heavy loads, i.e., equipment and material components weighing one hundred (100) pounds in a single person lift or two hundred (200) pounds in a two person lift. Must be able to climb ladders, including but not limited to, rung and step ladders. This position also requires incumbent to be able to walk, stoop, bend, crawl, ascend/descend stairs, steps, and ladders, etc., withstand heights of over 150 feet, climb up and down transit car(s) with a step height of as much as three (3) feet, lift leg(s) a height of twenty-four (24) inches to clear third rail by stepping over same, and perform in a confined space.

This position requires the incumbent to work both indoors and outdoors in all types of lighting and weather conditions including but not limited to, heat, sun, rain, snow and ice. Protective clothing, eye protection, hearing protection, dust masks and respirators are provided to protect against the elements such as chemical splashing, airborne debris, toxic fumes, and sustained loud or high pitch noises that may be encountered in the railroad environment. Hearing protection will be issued when appropriate, and whereas, the wearing of such protection does not pose a safety risk to the employee during the performance of the essential job functions.
